Hi There

Has anybody managed to squeeze a General Guitar Gadgets Tube Screamer in to a Hammond enclosure - 1590B ?

I have had a look at it and it seems it wont go  :'(

Any guidance much appreciated.

Thanks for that Pyrop

But I have already built the GGG TS and for reasons of Pedal Board Space and the fact I have a spare 1590B
enclosure, would really like to make it fit.

Having had another look it might just go but the board will have to go in with components facing in to the box and the
copper tacks facing the lid.

If anybody else has done this I would welcome your input!

Both the Tonepad and U-Stomp (http://ustomp.com/index.html?menu=2&section=15) layouts will fit nicely in a 1590B.  I have one built into a 1590B with 4 pots/controls, and plenty of room for wallwart jack and indicator LED.

Looking at my Tubescreamer (even though I built it from the tonepad layout) it seems that it would be possible. Just mount the board up high, with the pots and jacks under it (leaves about 1cm of completely free spaceabove them) , I think if you bend over the electolytics you can get it in there

Mark Hammer

Don't even need to bend the electrolytics over, or any "greenies" you use.  I didn't, and had no problems.  Just make sure the board is fully populated before you pop the holes in the chassis so you can see where to position the pots to avoid space conflicts.

I read your post this week but am only now checking this out.
I am planning on the GGG TS build and never gave the 1590B a second thought.
Well now that I lay the parts in the box it is a tight fit.
(Note that my PCB is a little long and needs trimming. But I might just use that extra to mount the LED and resistor)

Here is the GGG TubeScreamer PCB in a 1590B
A battery might fit on the side of the PCB depending where the jacks end up which depends on the PCB.
The PCB is slanted. One end is on the pots and the other touching the box top.
I think I have decided against the 1590B because there is little room for  the AMZ Fat mod switch.

So I moved it up to a Small Bear 125B "wild mouse" box.
If you do the "JD Sleep" style of jack mounting all on the back, then the PCB can live on top of the pot and below the jacks.

Finally here is the 1590BB for comparison. Plenty of room. The PCB can use plastic adhesive standoff right to the box ( no hovering over pots/jacks) and there is comfortable working room to add several mods like off-board switchable clipping devices.

well, look at that :) thanks a lot Pushtone... I'm sure there are a few people that will find these visual aids useful!

I'd go with the BB version but, that's just me.  :-\
-Or- you could use the tonepad layout and that would be comfortable in the 1590B.
I have a layout around here somewhere in my gallery for a compact TS808 build I think.  :icon_confused:

Yeah, I'm leaning to the BB too. I want to add a couple of the GGG mods. Perhaps make a second footswitch to switch between diode and led clippers.

Do ya think that would make a pop? When switching clipping devices?

Great pictures Pushtone !!!

I have managed to get some really low profile Elec. Caps for the GGG Tubescreamer and I think that now I will be able to get it to fit in the 1590B by mounting it with the componets facing in to the box - will let you know how it goes.

Very interested in the other GGG mods. Has anybody done the Keeley mod and if so how much of a change does it make to the sound?

You inspried me to move the GGG TS up in the build list.

Start it this weekend.

I have the board done and the off board wires. But I'm missing 1uf caps so I can't listen to it yet.

Here's what I'm doing.

The Keely substitutions mods.
SI and LED clipper toggle switch
Asymmetrical clipping diode on a toggle switch.

I chickened out on the 1590B and went with the SB125B.
Just need those 1uF caps.

I'm tempted to just use a 1uF ceramic.
I need a 1uF for a BSIAB build too.

Just to finish this thread I did manage to get GGG TS in to the Hammond enclosure - 1590B.

I filed the board down to its absolute minimum size and cut a recess in the board between C9 and R11, so that the board would fit round the footswitch. This meant cutting through the earth but nothing links up to it after where the cut was made.

I fitted the low profile Elec. Caps. (5mm) and inserted the board with the components facing in to the box. Its a tight squeeze but it just goes.

One other small note when building the GGG TS. The board has been designed for 2N3904 transistors and this is not
the same as the 2SC815 as I found out when it did not work...DOH !!!

It sounds fantastic driving my Marshall TSL100 & 4*12 - so much so that this one is not going to be modded.

Now working on getting the Rebote 2.5 in to the same size box !

Cant you chop off the bit of PCB where "tube screamer" is written ??
Seems an empty extra 1cm of board ......

I've gotten into the habbit of leaving a little extra PCB space when I make boards.
I sometimes use the extra space for mounting the LED and  resistor, or distribute power/ground to a second PCB.

If I decide I don't need it I can cut it off at some point during a project.
There is usually a long gap between the time I etch boards and build projects and its a way to keep options open.
I rather be looking at it than looking for it.

In this case I went with the SB 125B box and ended up cutting that extra off.

I would love to see some pics of this. I'm attempting the same configuration - A GGG ITS8 in a 1590B enclosure.

i think that SRV TS you posted the layout for will EASILY fit in a B sized box.

Very True my friend!
Actually, the 808 and the SRV have the same dimensions so, both would be good-to-go!

Well, I've already done one in a large sized enclosure:

I like these bigger enclosures for prototyping so you can try different mods and such. But I'm currently working on getting this into a smaller enclosure. After trying the Fat Boost and clipping switch mods, I decided against them (not really worth the effort IMO) and they will not be in the final design. ;D

I thought I had some Hammond 1590B style enclosures, but they are the Small Bear 125B style. After closer inspection, it'll be a bit tight, but it should all fit.

MarcoMike

As my personal sentence says... I did.

here is a GGG tubescreamer in a eddystone 1950B enclosure (a couple of mm space less compared to the Hammond correspondent)
When I started I wanted to put a clipping diodes switch and the fat-mod... that came out to be the "absurd" part of the plan... ;)
Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible.
