4PDT?

I haven't drawn it out to verify but  I'm fairly sure that a true bypass could be made for stereo outputs with only a 3PDT and a transistor switching mechanism for the LED.

BTW, the Frantone pedals have a tiny relay inside them to do the true bypass while the DPDT poles drive the relay and LED on/off...  Anyone know the part number of the relay?  Seems like it was a Siemens if I remember correctly...

Quote from: zachary vexyou can't just go switching the power for the audio circuit on and off with the stomp switch.  it will make a terrible *pop* when you turn on the effect unless careful planning is done.  whatever reason they are using the 4pdt switch for, the analysis/judgement going on here is nonsensical.  WHO KNOWS what you might need a 4pdt for.  i've designed plenty of circuits that could benefit from one, and i've ended up creating swtiching circuits to replace the extra poles.  getting true-bypass and an LED can be accomplished with a dpdt or 3pdt, but sometimes there's a need for extra poles to control other aspects of the circuit... resetting things and reducing current draw are two possibilities, but for god's sake, let's not start bashing a company over a switch.

i used to make the ground going from the negative side of the batt to the led and to the actual board switch.  sure beats unpluggin my stuff for batterie drain. nopops.  though

I understand the concept but how would you mount it?
I though a hinged plate hooked to the box to actuate the two switches might help keep things in line...
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I suppose it means that they can remoce their switching circutry, removing both prts and construction costs.

Additionally when they buy on an industrial scale there is probably a tiny extra cost for a 4pdt. Plus the marketing dept know that a 4pdt must be better than 3pdt as it has a bigger number in it   .

I have a nice stash of 4PDT stomp switches that I use on most of my stuff. I don't usually need all the poles, but when I need a extra pole on the footswitch, they really make life much easier.

Jack, the relay in the Frantone pedals is indeed made by siemens, part # V23079. THe interesting, if not confusing, thing is that it is not a "latching" relay. In other words, when the effect is switched on, the relay is held closed by the battery. I'd imagine this would run the battery down much faster than if the relay latched. Maybe there isn't a latch relay in the small size needed for effects.
Also, you can do a stereo effect with a 3pdt, as long as you use a millenium/transistor type bypass like you stated. I figured out the wiring once a while back, I'll see if I've got it jotted down somewhere.  Anyways, Analogmike claims to use a 4pdt on his stereo  Clone Clone, so you should be able to do it with a 3 pole and transistor switching. Jorge Tripps once told me that he uses a 4pdt relay to mod CE 1's  to true bypass.

This Seimens data sheet show the coil current at 140mW which would put the current draw between roughly 15 and 30mA depend on the voltage. Yikes!   That's more than most effects draw, but it does have the cool characteristic of fail-safe if the battery or AC adapter goes out.

JRobinson, would you be kind enough to post the suffix of the part number? (something like A1006B201) Thanks! :)

The entire nomenclature is as follows:
SIEMANS LO39943B
V23079 - D2001 - B301

I appologize for incomplete info in the first post. What I gave was what I could remember as being what I looked up in a Newark catalog. I had to dig through my drawings to get the rest of the numbers.

Peter Snowberg

Thank you. :D I appreciate it.

That would make the coil current 28mA(!).

They'd be great for a remote effects switcher! That's why I've kept them in mind. If I recall, they are around $2.50 in lots of 10, but don't quote me on it.
