Pot numbers

Does anyone have an easy way of working out what pins are what on a pot, ive been drawing up some schems and the program im using has two different on board variable resistors, one has:
pin 1 - top
pin 2 - adj
pin 3 - bottom

and the other has:
pin 1 - top
pin 2 - bottom
pin 3 - adj

The drawings are also different one has the the arrow on the right hand side and the other on the left,
Does it matter what pins you use as much as the off board pots?

My guess is the first one is intended to be a variable voltage control while the second is meant for series resistance. If you are going off board it is not a major problem as long as you remember to make the change. If it is a actual schematic, and not a board layout, you are drawing then it may not make sense to others who read it.

This is for pots on a board such as the ones on the matchbox pedal by runoffgroove, http://www.runoffgroove.com/matchbox.html
I had that numbered as 3 2 1 from top to bottom which was fine but i realised that was for a smd pot when i changed it to a pot that was thru hole the pin numbers 2 and 3 were swapped around,
Maybe ill up my schematics so someone can check them
