hey guys

reading that octavia/o thread regarding dunlop making false claims about Jimi's use got me interested in looking at getting a wah.. read on to find out why..

a long time ago when i was naieve to marketing i was interested in some of jimi's wah tones..

i was not very keen on having a chunky wah pedal so i bought the phase-90 size "jimi hendrix" wah from dunlop. i dont think they sell it any more. i think it was called Q-1 or something like that. anyway.. it was terrible and went on ebay within days.

i seriously doubt that jimi put a foot anywhere near a pedal containing similar circuitry to this Q-1. it is an absolute discrace that they get to put jimi's name on things like this. i bet that the circuitry in other dunlop "jimi hendrix system" pedals don't come close to anything he played either.

i still dont like the current dunlop wah pedal shell.. so i will be looking to make my wah from a different enclosure. can anyone suggest a good source for cool hipster wah shells? something different to the current dunlop model?

my real question is, what is the red lion wah kit like? is it remotly like the wah sounds jimi used? not to insult your marketing roger, but everyones wah marketing claims they make you sound just a good as jimi hendrix these days. lol.

does the RED LION kit come with all I need except the shell? do i need special wah pots and other bits and bobs?

should i be making my own from scratch? is there an ultimate wah that kicks ass over all others available here on perf/vero?

it would be really cool if someone was able to upload sound samples of the red lion wah.

cheers

EDIT: also anyone got any good info/sounds on the RED LION BAND OF GYPSIES version?

PM   thebattleofmidway   - he's one of the wah gurus here.He sells wah boards and drop in kits built to tone. So, if you're looking for a specific sound - he can give it to you. He's a member here, and he's cool!
Wah shells- Dunlop is it really the only type unless you gut a Morley or build your own.
Paul at www.diyguitarist.com has built several of his own from scratch. Check it out!

Jonathan (AKA, TBOM), has fantastic wahs... I ordered all the components, and the board (really, really professional looking boards to boot...)from him not but 1.5 to 2 weeks ago, and I put it all together myself... I am 100% satisfied with what I received and how it sounds. I asked him for a Hendrix-esque wah sound, and it's exactly what I got.

But... and a big but... http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=53360.0 ..... I think you're out of luck if you want one from him. He's not going to be building wah's for a while....

I modded my wahs for a while before I finally hit on how to do it - trimpots.  For the "mid range" resistor sub in a 5k trimpot, for the "bass resistor" sub in a 1k trimpot, and for the vocal resistor put in a 100k (or 150k might be interesting) trimpot.  You might also want a 100k trimpot for the input resistor that controls the volume of the pedal.  With these mods you can do in incredible amount of tuning and figure out what works best for your wah.  I did this to a Vox v847 and a Hendrix Wah, and I swapped the transistors for 2n5089s, and they both sound fantastic, although different because of the input buffer on the Hendrix and the different inductors.

So, before you drop money on the Lion Wah, at least try to get yours working right.

i dont have a wah at all at the moment. I was thinking of the RM Red Lion stright into a CB shell with a pot from SB.

my alternative is looking at the VOX Clyde McCoy reissue to save time.

I haven't heard the McCoy reissue, but I want to spend some time with one at some point.  My recommendation is watch for a used V847.  They can be gotten cheaply (I think I paid $40 for mine), and the PCB holds up better to modding than the Dunlops I've worked on for some reason.  With the v847, you get a decent inductor, and the original Vox circuit with no buffers/extra stuff.

thanx guys!  ;D

well...it looks like ill be back in business soon.

sadly, i cant control my iron's will.

as of now, i wouldnt bother with anything besides DIY. i wont buy a fulltone wah, a RM wah, or look at a new dunlop wah.

the new clydes DONT sound like clyde wahs...

anyways, GGG has the layout for you, and ive got the values, if you go with that board, PM me and ill send the correct values and extra info..

or post it on here, its not a big secret.  :D
no longer the battle of midway...(i left that band)...

i hate signatures with gear lists/crap for sale....

i am a wah pervert...ask away...

hey tbom

i presume you mean this one http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/wah_847_lo_tb.gif ?

i might do up my own perf because the pcb looks like it can take a lot of mods i am not going to use.

if you could pm me the correct parts that would be great :)

also, which inductor do i use if i want it to be as original as it can be to the original CMC wah? and where can i buy one?

cheers
