Does anyone know of a place that carries parts assortments? Like a selection of often-used resistor and capacitor values that I don't have to bugger about with ordering four hundred different items my damn self?  :icon_lol: I think Mouser had something like this, but I can't find it on their website.

Here you go. http://www.futurlec.com/cgi-bin/search/search.cgi
I bought the ceramic cap pack, electro cap pack and the mylar cap pack. I also bought the resistor pack.

OK, it seems like that kink is bad. Just go to futurlec.com and type in "assortment" in the search field.

That's pretty much what I was looking for. Radio Shack had something like this, but their prices were about double what these are, for a third the components.  :icon_rolleyes: Thanks!

Yeah but, they do have Cell Phones!  :icon_rolleyes:

Look for prototyping kits on Mouser.

It's too bad really that Radio Shack has conformed to the everyday consumer.  First it was computers.  Now of course it's cell phones.  It's hard for them to survive unless they sell popular items.   Here in Michigan we had an old electronics store called Olsen Electronics.  I loved that store.  I wasn't even into electronics that much at the time but I would walk through it every chance I got.  Olsens went out of business and at that time Radio Shack was still selling to electronic experimentalists.  To be honest most of the OD, fuzz and distortion I have built are RS parts. So you can still get a lot of what you need there but they are at higher cost than online companies.   Now the only electronics store that's brick and mortar around for me is Abel Electronics (used to be Bell Electronics).  Their prices are shocking.  $10.00 for pots.  $6.00 for one cap.  It's absolutely ridiculous.  So these days if you want to build anything but a distortion type pedal or want to buy in bulk you really have to buy online.

1% metal films, 2000 for 10 bucks.  Shipping is a bit more, but it's a good deal.  Their cap pack is good too.

On the other hand, things have never been better for DIY amp and pedal building. With online specialty stores, you can get exactly what you want, often in one place. I have an electronics shop near me, called You-Do-It, and the prices range from high to brutal. A forty cent cap goes for about 2.35! Their NOS tube prices are about 4x internet retail. I still go there in an emergency, but it kills me to do it. I've bought from RS, but I don't expect anything from them.

Well, considering the 50:50 chance of you actually recieving the order makes 'em equal.

:icon_eek: Yeah, I sprang for that. If I get 'em I'm happy.

It's ridiculous how cheap components are...

Hi Jimbo,

Are you refering to Futurlec? I've bought from them a few different times and I've never had a problem. I've even emailed their sales team a couple of times and got quick responses. What kind of problems have you had?

Dave

Well then you must be within the good 50. I never got mine, no reply either. Then again, it was a few years ago, they might have improved the customer service meanwhile.

Don't be surprised, search for some rants on the net or even in this forum, it does sum up to roughly about 50:50.

Yes I am in the USA. I'm glad I didn't do a search for them before I purchased from them. Actually, the way I found Futurlec was through a similar post here about buying assortments. Since I bought the assortments from them, I really only buy resistors from them now. 1 cent each for carbon film and 2 cents each for metal film.

i've bought from futurle twice in tha past and have never had a problem.  i just placed a third order so i hope the rumors aren't 100% true

I've bought from Futurlec more than just a couple of times.  The biggest problem they have is slow ship time...I've had small errors in my orders in the past, but they always made good on them when contacted.  I find Mouser's catalogue to be too intimidating to order from unless I know exactly what I want.

However, DO NOT order their resistor pack.  Too many really really low values that don't do much good.  Just pick the resistors you want.  The mylar cap pack on the other hand is pretty nice.

The capacitor packs from  futurlec are great and I've never had problems with them.
