Hi, what do you mean by augment the gain? If you want more gain you could lower the value of R13. The stock value is 4.7K. I've used 2.2K and even down to 1K there. The 1K really gives is alot of distortion. Experiment and see what you like best.

The DS-1 also uses diodes to affect the sound of the distortion. D4 and D5 are your clipping diodes. You can try experimenting with them too. Sometimes I replace the stock 1N4148's with 1N4002's or 4001's. You'll have to file out the holes a little to use them though. I use a very small triangular needle file and just stick the tip in the holes and spin it around. It works very well for me. Just be carefull not to file too much. Go slowly and check often to see if the 1N4002 will fit. You could try other diodes in there as well; LED's or 1n34A's might sound good too but I've never tried them. Try different combinations too, you might find something you really like.

I hope this is helpfull.

There are many ways to "augment" the gain, but not all leave the tone unaffected.
