Crybaby JH-1 Issues

Hi all,

I've modded my JH-1 so it's true bypass with LED for on position and changed the 33k resistor (near inductor) to a 56k for more vocal sounding. I took the input buffer stage out and increased the gain with another resistor change. The transformation is incredible, absolutely what I was looking for, however there is one characteristic with this wah that I'm still not happy with. In the heel down position, there's a drop in volume and sounds too muffled for my ears. The toe end is fine, but maybe a tiny bit too much highes. What mods can I do to improve this characteristic?

In case you were wondering, this characteristic was there before the mods and not as a result of bad modding.

Thanks in advance

Kevin

did I recall that some JH wah have some silly small caps where the .22s would normally go in a wah?

maybe a switch to .22s would help

or try the teese trick of swapping a .33 where the .22 is off the wiper of the poat might - he does this to replicate the 60s wah tapers but might be worth a try

try bypassing the buffer, I have heard this can make the wah trebly

try swapping in some lower gain trannies, that might sweeten it up

on the schematic here http://www.geocities.com/j4_student/jh1wah.gif,
there are two extra caps that early wahs didn't have - one off the wiper to ground and one paralleling the inductor, I wonder what removing these would do.

or, if you leave the buffer in place you could try the Crowther fatwah mod

Thanks Joe, I'll give the cap change a try. I havent come across that 'fat wah' before. what kind of effects does it have?

I don't know, i never tried the fatwah.

some of the guys here have built it tho

Problem solved. I changed the 22nF cap in the Jimi back to 10nF as per standard GCB-95.
