This is my "ultimate Rat clone" design. FKR stands for Four Knob Rat, and it is a very fun build.

I've created a PDF with the schematic, layouts, parts placement, wiring diagram and parts list. I'm sure there are a few errors here or there, but with some dilligence, it is a buildable project. Please feel free to ask questions or make suggestions.

And thanks very much to all the folks on this forum for advice and ideas!

Dano, although I'm probably one of the few that thinks that a rat = nails on a chalkboard, I must say that your builds are phenomenal. This is probably one of the best documented and well put together projects out there.

Congrats my man, you hit it out of the ballpark with this one.  :icon_exclaim:

Wow!!! That's a nice one!
Lots of time spent here. I appreciate your efforts and especially sharing it in these "tough times" here....

The Beavis philosophy is:

- learn as much as I can
- publish schematics (and layouts whenever possible) for everything I do
- never get behind on answering email questions (yeah right...)
- make enough selling stuff to buy parts for the next project
- be nice to everyone :)

I think it is a nice karma-balanced approach.

Thank you Dano for sharing all those information. Your website is a goldmine.
My components order for the FKR project was shipped today  :icon_biggrin: Hopefully I know what I'll be doing this week end.
I'll build mine using stripboard or perfboard.

Big thanks Dano for your great website, it's been vary usefull to when building heavily modded TS-9, and I'm gonna try some of your ideas in FKR when modding my RAT 2.

EDIT: oh, and 100 karma points from me also!!! ;)

really impressive Dano. this is great learning material plus the fkr sounds awesome (samples + videos).

I was thinking about making a rat in the next weekend... I probably will have to buy a bigger enclosure and more switches :)

Cool man!

It is almost the same as the one I always build :)

Another cool mod; change the compensation cap when you change the clipping diodes. The various modes gets more versatile and different

Hi Dano

This is an increadable amount of work.  Just checked your website  :o

I have never been much of a Rat fan, but I think I'm going to build your FKR just to see.

Thank you for sharing..

Wonderful!

Tankh you Dano for this cool project!

Dano, thanks for the posting. I have not been a Rat fan, but your build looks exciting and interesting. Could you please post or email a box drilling template? Are you using PCB mounted switches or adapting conventional switches? Thanks, Ron

been wanting to build a rat clone.. great... lets us hear the difference of clipping components.. great learnin project for newbies like me..

thanks in advance to everyone who helped me in anyway.

I'm using a 1790NS box, but if the drilling template would be helpful, I'll add it to the build guide tonight.

Switches are standards miniature toggles with solder lugs. Nice big traces and holes on the board accomodate them nicely. It would probably be an easier and cleaner build with pcb-mount type switches.

Dano, a box template would be great. I am having no luck trying to resize your PCB. What programs do you use to resize? I'm about ready to make a PCB if I can't get this resized! Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron, I burned the etch graphics to a PDF so resizing issues should go away:

I'll get the build guide updated with the drill template tonight.

Hi Dano, thanks, that printed perfectly. I'm going to start my build this weekend and also finish up some other unfinished projects. Thanks again, Ron

I've just finished the main board layout on stripboard. I'm about to make the clipboard layout and I feel like you have to bend the leads of the mosfets, am I right ? The leads seem relatively sturdy but can I bend them with confidence ?
