hi guys

from the various threads i have have just spent 2 hours researching - it is recommended to buy the matching pair of transistors from small bear.

are these the ones > "Transistor Pair - The Fuzz Face PNP" > http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=10

what exactly are they? are they NOS AC128's? are they something else Ge? maybe silicone? The description leaves a lot to the imagination :)

if they are NOS AC128's or something else Ge - are they hfe identical matched, or are they considered to be a suitably matched pair as in 1x 110hfe + 1x 90hfe?

with so much of the tone riding on the trannies - is there any way to guarantee good tone before purchase?

cheers

Yeah, at 12 bucks a pair it can be a little scary.  I'm not sure exactly what they are, but I used them to build my fuzz face (from tonepad) and it sounds awesome.  That's about all I can say.

Please check out this "How-To":

It covers your question, and many others that will probably come up as you shop.

fyi the pair I got were 2N1305, hfe 129 and 185. He gives you a list of what resistor values to use with transistors you get. very cool and well worth $12 as I once spent forever getting the resistor values right on a real FF

  Transistors that meet the criterion.
Shapes and print markings come in last in priority as far as GE transistor sorting goes, Leakage and gain define the 'name of the tune'...for picking transistors that work great in FF type circuits.
SB"s are pre-tested and documented for leakage and gain.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
