hi!i need a good fuzz for my vox(el84) ??? i have built a fuzz face(si,ge)but it is not i was looking for  :icon_rolleyes:  .i want a smooth sounding fuzz with good harmonics and good cleanup with the volume knob.i think the ggg toneburner is a good idea.any other suggestions?

I haven't made the fuzz face yet so I don't really know what it sounds like, but I can highly recommend the Red Fuzz from GGG. It's the nicest fuzz I have heard to date

tcobretti

You might want to think about a Big Muff.  They are very flexible and to my ears pretty smooth sounding.  There are many. many mods to allow you to tune it to your tastes.

They are a little more complicated than a Fuzz Face, but it might be worth it for you.

The other thing to remember is that Fuzz Faces have an incredible amount of flexibility depending on the components and values you use.  You might very well be able to tune your FF to make it what you want.

This is a layout of mine that talks discusses the effects of changing values.

i'd go for the big muff and experiment with all of the mods that are available!

I suggest that you breadboard a few fuzzes and see what you like.

The Bazz Fuss is very simple if you want to try it. So is the Muff Fuzz.

or Run-off-groove's whisker biscuit, if you want a BMPi alternative.....

Maybe you guys are using a dfferet Big Muff than me, but the OP said he was looking for good cleanup with the vol knob. With a Big Muff?  :icon_rolleyes: I don't think so.

Ben makes a very good point.  If you want the ability to clean it up, a Fuzz Face or a Axis Fuzz is probly the way you want to go.

axis fuzz...hmmm(any verified layouts?)!?!i also want a tone knob  :icon_redface:

tcobretti

You can put the big muff tone knob on the end of any effect, but you will likely need to boost the signal afterward, so you will want to tack a booster (like a LPB) on the end of it.

There is a schem and a PCB lyout at this site for the Rpger Mayer Axis Fuzz.  It is basically a more refined slightly treblier FF.  It also lacks a tone knob, so you'd have to do the same trick with tacking a BMP tone stack/booster on the end.

thanks !what do you think of the ggg toneburner(or other tonebender)?

tcobretti

The only Tonebender I have heard is the Si Mk II, and it is great.  It is also very similar to the Axis Fuzz.  Depending on the amp, it can be hard for me to tell the difference.

big muff and leave it be...i would....
no longer the battle of midway...(i left that band)...

i hate signatures with gear lists/crap for sale....

i am a wah pervert...ask away...

Smooth? Cleanup? Tim Escobedo's Harmonic Jerkulator.

Steben

I think you only get good smooth vintage fuzz if it boosts you're amp too into a bit distortion. It cuts the harsh away. try to set clean to almost no clipping and set you're fuzz volume  bit higher. done.

i used to boost my ff with a mosfet booster and it was really good sounding!but... no note definition in cords  :icon_cry: (but good for solo!)

alfafalfa

I can highly recommend "the red Fuzz"

You can find it on www.generalguitargadgets.com
One of the best I aever built and there are mods to finetune it to your own taste.

Tried it, but I would never boost a ff again... it's no ff any more...

You don't really need to add a booster to use the BMP tonestack. If you tap off the signal at the collector of Q2 (instead of the resistor junction as is stock), that'll give you all the gain you need from a FF circuit.
