Condor Cab Sim Question

I am almost done assembling the Condor Cabinet Simulator as shown here:

My question:  Can I just connect lug 1 of the gain pot to the ground on the circuit board?  And, do most potentiometers used to vary gain have the same type of connection to ground that a volume control has?
