Clean Boost w/ tone control

Greetings.

I have been looking for a simple plan to build a clean boost with a tone control but I've been unsuccessful so far.  Does anyone have any idea where I could find an easy to follow layout for such a thing?  Perhaps an Orange Squeezer with a tone control added?  I've built a tube screamer, but the tone control doesn't work ('though it sounds fantastic without it) and so I'm not feeling too confident about my ability nor my understanding of the circuitry or I would go that route.

If I can't build one, I'm very tempted to buy a factory made Sparkle Drive.

I seek guidance.

Try a Fetzer Valve and add a simple tone control. I did it, and it works nicely. An Orange Squeezer isn't a booster per se.
An LPB or Microamp would also do the trick.
I will quietly resist.

Feltzer valve?  Add a tone control from where?  I can follow a plan, but I'm really just a beginner.  Do you have any information on how to build and install a simple tone control?  What is a Feltzer valve?  Sorry for my ignorance.

Hey Paule,

Try these links...

ROG Fetzer Valve:

Try putting an AMZ tone control at the end of a Fetzer Valve and see what it does.  Also, do a search on this forum for the Fetzer Valve and see what layouts people have used for it.  I personally would recommend the AMZ Mosfet Boost as a clean boost, it's my personal favorite.  There is a couple great layouts for the Mosfet Boost in MarkM's layout gallery.

Good luck,

I second the AMZ Mosfet Booster, I love this thing.  I've built one for the front and end of my chain.  I suggest searching for Mark Hammer's Stupidly Wonderful Tone Control.  I was looking for it to post the link, however I have been unsuccessful at finding it.  WHY?!  A lot of people seem to have good results with it.  Take care and good luck!

ROG Tonemender. It's incredible. A must build. A clean boost with the most versatile tone stack. Period.

sort of on topic, but why do people think compressors make for boosts?

im not sure how to make the connection.

(im not being an ass, im really curious.)

Well, most compressors have a gain control and usually it's much more than just unity.  I remember back in the 80's when people used CS-2's for lead boosts all the time.  Hell, sometimes I still use one for a boost.

The Omega (new at ROG) gets my vote.  The tone control is not typical....but a nice bass-roll-off.
Not perfectly clean...but not too dirty.  Able to dial in just the right tone for many amps....even a little Ruby!

try LPB with big muff pi tone stack
experiment with the tone caps if you want to
ive never personally tried this but i might some day

hey thebattleofmidway,

I use the Boss CS-2 as a boost... it's on ALL the time.... why ??  Cause DAMN it sounds good!  No really, I put the attack at max, gain at 12 and sustain at around 2 o`clock, through my peavey classic 50;  it gives me great crunch, great tone and excellent sustain.  I never put it off.  Then for leads I use a LPB in the effects loop to boost the volume just a bit.  When I go clean I just play with my volume or pickup switch on my Jag.

Oh... I also bought that CS-2 from a guy for 40$ about 8 years ago...  found out later the guy stole it!!  :icon_mrgreen:

This is the compressor you'll never want to sell... well... in my case... anyway  :icon_wink:

Many compressors are capable of providing boost in the absence4 of any audible compression.  In 1979 I used to use my old Univox "Clamp" pedal as compressor, booster, and volume pedal.  I connected my E-H Hot Foot to the output volume control so I could swell either compressed or uncompressed signal.  Worked like a charm.

No one has mentyioned this one so far, so I will.  Go to Steve Ritmeyer's U-stomp site (http://www.ustomp.com/) and look at the Boss FA-1 project.  If it's good enough for Dave "Edge" Evans, it's giood enough for you.
