Orange Sunshine ridiculously gated

Long story short I built an Orange Sunshine. Plug it in, whack the strings, and it goes *BLAPT* and cuts off. Okay, fine, misbiased. I change the 10K resistor out with a 33k resistor. Plug it in, whack the strings, and it goes *blpt*. How can it be WORSE? I plug my LPB into the front of it to see how bad it really is and I have to play damned hard to get it to make noise.

Something's really wrong and I don't know why. I'm getting about .6v to the collector of Q1. Everything is hooked up fine. I reflowed all the connections and everything. Checked, rechecked, and re-rechecked the wiring. It's all correct.

But it goes *blpt*

*grumble*

I'm using 2N2222's, BTW.

What is the collector voltage at Q2?

Q1 and Q2 have about the same readings. There's .6 collector, 0 base, and 0 emitter.

0 on the bases is way off.

No kidding. So what causes that? My first thought was something is grounded where it shouldn't be, but that's just not the case here. :icon_sad:

what layout are you using?

The perf layout in the gallery. http://aronnelson.com/gallery/albums/album151/ORANGE_SUNSHINE_FUZZ_PERFBOARD_001.gif

Left hand side of R3 goes nowhere ... should be Vcc ?

Yep and that would keep the bases at 0 volts.

Pretty much it is a fuzz face without any controls.  Cool pedal, cool sound, very zen.

But what about the .6v at the collector? ??? That's what has me stumped.  :icon_question: :icon_neutral:

May work better with low gain Si ?
2n2222 or whatever measures under 100hfe or so...
Long story short?... from vague memory of Orange Sunshine experiences, and reads
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Yep R3 is just hanging open it should go to V+
It's an easy fix just connect R3 to R2 @ V+.

Hate to be preachy but... the search button is your friend :icon_wink: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=54526.0
I took the corrected layout down, guess Andrew never got around to changing it.

That's the way I had it. I always cross-reference schematics and layouts to avoid such screwups. :icon_wink:
