bass preamp/direct box recs

anyone have recomendations for a DIY bass preamp/booster/direct box? i've been starting to play a bit of bass and have no desire to lug around a second rig just for one or two tunes. i tried playing right into my RI bassman but cannot get any volume out of it without soundinto all farty. just want a nice clean sound with a little body to it.

Sounds like a speaker/cabinet upgrade (15" speaker).  Boosting more bass tone will likely add to the "fartyness" if your speaker/cabinet all ready sounds farty with the bass guitar.

What I would do is get a good Bass Guitar combo and transfer your six-string over to that.

The bass player in our band has two amps and lets me borrow his Peavey TK75 sometimes (which has a 15" speaker in it) for which my six-string sounds fantastic on that combo.

i should have noted that i did convert the bassman to 2x12 some years ago. no, what i'm interested in doing is running the bass straight into the board, not into any guitar amp or bass amp.
