Schaller Tremolo Troubles

I'm building the Shcaller Trem from this schematic:



I can't find the sub for the BC170. I've tried using the standard 2N3904 and 2N5088 with an MPSA18 in the Q2 position but it doesn't work. Of course, everything appears wired correctly.  Other than the trannies, no part subs.

Also, the Depth pot seem sot turn off the effect at either end while the LFO is coming through loud, clear and choppy as heck.
