I plan on changing transistors in my Russian muff,i have 2n5089's which i know are fine and I'll probably use, but how do  2n3565's compare to these?

what I'm asking is are the 5089's much higher gain than 3565's or what?
I just don't want to bother wasting time if they aren't even as high gain as 2n5088!
Yeah,i don't have a multi meter,never needed one.......until now that is.

BTW,the search turned up nothing on this, which is odd for me because i always get everything i need from the search, hence such a low post count!

Al i found on google was that the 2n3565 is highgain, but no comparison to a 2n5088/9.
And how to make a lie detector!

Edit: I googled once again out of frustration, its always the same.5088-max hfe 900/5089 max hfe-1200/3565 max hfe 600.this doesnt tell me everything i want to know as i'm still a bit of a noob with technical details of parts i use.

Search google for:

A. 2n3565 Datasheet
B. 2n5089 Datasheet

Compare the hfe columns from each datasheet

And, surely, everyone needs a mulitmeter!?

Yea,a multi meter is on my list this week!
The reason I'm a little uncertain about these 2 types is a foxx tone machine isn't exactly a subtle fuzz and it uses 2n3565.
So since the 2n5089s are higher gain than 3565's  but the foxx still has a real thick fuzzy sound would i be right to assume that alot of the tone machines thick sound comes from else where on the circuit?

mattpocket

Surely if you are building this to original specs, and you can get hold of the 3565's (smallbear have them) then you want to use those right?

Yea i built the foxx to orig specs with NOS 2n3565 from steve.

I'm just wanting to thicken up and sustain my RU muff and was thinking maybe the 2n3565's would be a start because of how well they work in a foxx.

But...after looking over the schem of the foxx and RU muff a little more today it seems i should be using 2n5089's in the muff and changing the input/output caps as 2n3565's alone aren't gonna give me what i want in the BMP circuit! They work well in the foxx tho.

So i spose i found my answer!

Another wasted thread.

Certainly wasnt wasted... and it helped you to make your own mind up! ;D

I was just about to say you need to look at any input/output caps and tone controls too...

Take a look at the modding section of the FAQ, theres loads of info to increase bass response in there! ;)

Look into Yun's supermuff mods- a boost in front and a midrange control(a little more too I think). That'll thicken things up...

Thanks peoples!

Yea,i got hold of Yun and he gave me a few ideas and tips, gonna try his tonestack, diode clipping mod and change the input caps.
