I was looking a way to connect a pair of npn-pnp transistors and this is what came up. Similar to a darlington pair.

Tweak R1 until you find the g-spot. The sound will snap into focus. Very much like the Bazz Fuss. Hope you like it.
If you have a very low leaky Ge pnp then you can use it at Q2. The leakage is a problem in this configuration, also the temperature, but the sound is a lot better. A Ge single diode did not work for me, may 2 or 3 in series.
Since the base current is very small, the diode can be replaced with a large resistor, of the order of several Megs. The final gain is less, maybe a switch to choose between the diode and the resitor.

Pretty cool !
Looks like famous two-transistor Sziklai circuit.
I think that adding couple "several MegaOhm" resistors - one from base of Q1 to ground and another one from base of Q2 to 9V will solve the temperature\leakage problem drastically. Surely it will reduce the total gain, but at the same time it will be possible to use hi-gain trannies to compensate gain reduction.
Too old to rock'n'roll, too young to die

MIguel,
Thanks for the link. I guess that those resistors between the bc549 and the Ge increase the Ge hfe to FF standards. Interesting.

I did not used your russian Ge yet, just breadboarded and tested, but they sound as clear as a Si. As you told me I had to use a 47 - 101 cap from B to C.

The Jordan Bosstone uses the same transistor arrangement.
