Wah to volume pedal mod

I see that I can lift the Cbp (4.7uF cap) and the wah will turn into a "volume" pedal. Has anyone tried this and does the "crippled" wah circuit screw up the tone of the guitar as opposed to simply switching out the entire wah circuit and just use the pot only?

i usually just rip out the parts and stick in a pot w/ treble bypass cap for passive vol control.  Sorry i can't help ya.

Yes, I have this mod on my wah. It is usable but because of the throw of the pedal's pot, & how I have he wah set for more of a high treble sound, it does not go completely off when the pedal is all the way up. I can adjust this but I like the response of the wah the way it is, so I'm not changing it. I can still do some cool swell parts that get mellow and then come in hard for the leads & strong rythms. And to answer your question, you do get the tone of the pedal in your sound. Because I like the way mine is tuned, this is fine. And the inductor is not being used when the cap is lifted so it's not a wah sound your working with. With doing the Volume mod, when the pedal is fully depressed it becomes more of a booster pedal. Which is fun to play with.

I used a simple SPDT switch that I can hit with my foot.

my problem with doing this (and this was with a stock gcb-95) is the sweep of the pot.  and once you've got it to where it will turn the sound all the way off, it won't go to full volume. A change of pot was in order in my situation.

I've did this to my Vox V847 just now - I like the results, except as you said, it doesn't go all the way down in volume. I disconnected the gear and played with the potentiometer throw, and at no point did the volume go all the way down - close, but not all the way. Any ideas? Would a different pot achieve zero volume at heel down?

Aron:

I have zero bench time for the foreseeable future, but I have a V847 reissue which I am considering adding volume functionality to.  I am considering using "the tone god"'s "Rock'n'Control" 3-pole version to replace the wah pot.  I would think that one could take this a step further if using homegrown optocouplers.  I don't see a reason that extra photocells couldn't be grafted onto each output LED.  In this way, you would implement a "stereo" pot.  Add a 3PDT switch and some buffering and I'd think you'd be done.

I've tried this mod, using the old Maestro Boomerang wiring in a Cry Baby Wah, but volume doesn't reach zero level, aven with pot a minimun. Do anyone know some other wiring just to make it work better? I think Jen Mr Cry Baby is similar.

i noticed a serious lack in treble with the heel down, so i used a dpdt with the second pole controlling the input cap. i used a .047uF and it sounds pretty good to me. i don't use it to drop the volume to zero, if i wanted that, i'd just use a killswitch when it gets low :icon_wink: but it makes slides and other dynamics pretty fun, main driving force for me is to help control the volume of dives with my floyd. still gotta master the technique
