Oh! I forgot to post about this...

Early this year, I bought a MIM Jazz Bass for $175. I only had it for a month or two before my girlfriend asked me to show her a few notes on it. That did it. She has been playing it 2-5 days a week ever since. I set it up so it is as easy as possible for her to play-- light strings, low action, thumb rest. It buzzes up and down the whole neck when I play it, but there is no buzzing when she plays her girly notes. I tune it for her (for now), so she can have fun, and hopefully remain interested (I've been trying to get her to play an instrument for over a decade).

Anyway, it came to a head two weeks ago. She wanted to play. I was busy working on home repairs. She tuned it her self-- well, she tried to tune it herself. See, she's only five feet tall on a good day, and so her arms are really short. That's right, she couldn't reach the tuners for the G or the D! HAHAHahahaha!

She needed her own small scale bass. Her birthday was Saturday, and last week, this arrived:

Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale. $170 delivered, w/ a free cable, from Sweetwater. 30" scale. Jazz-type 1.5" nut width. Thin, fast neck. What an incredible instrument for the price! There are definitely areas for improvement, and I have already done some of them, but it was playable right out of the box.

She's downstairs thumping away on the amp I found on Craigslist for $125, practically brand new, with a plate-aluminum wheeled cart:

And now, I get to give my bass a big-boy setup. :P

Me too, and I think she will now that she is invested in playing, and since her bass stares her in the face. Her average practice session with the new bass has gone from 45 min to between 90 mins and 2 hours. She can tune it herself, so that is a bonus. She is more willing to try adjusting the knobs on her own bass, even though I told her time and again that she couldn't break my bass by turning the knobs.

I typed up a full review (from a guitar player's perspective) and posted it here. :)

The Tone God

Made this the other day:

An acoustic hole cover that limits the amount of air for feedback control. It also holds the internal mic from flopping around. I have another piece (not pictured) that goes inside which rotates to cover the holes making an air flow control.

I'll make a better mic holder later. I have another idea for another hole cover that I'll try later.

Me'shell N'degeocello has that problem with her J-Bass, but I can say as that it has caused her any difficulties.

And just as a by the by, try telling HER that she is playing "Girly notes."  You might walk out of the room with your head attached, but certain other parts won't be!

Thats an interesting design Andrew. I'm playing with a Planet Waves "O-Port" at the moment.

Needs more basses in here.

I bought a bass collection SB320 about a year ago. I loved it so much I grabbed an SB310 to pair with it.  ;D

Worst bit is it didn't come with the original preamp which I loved. The good news from this though is that there is a very nice preamp in my SB320 and it has no gooping what so ever so in the next few weeks, I'll take a look at the board, make a schematic and I'll clone it. If all goes well, I'll throw it up on here for you guys to pick at and enjoy.

The 320 has gold hardware, the black has 310 and the original knobs are still in the case. Shame it doesn't have the original P pickup and that for some reason, doesn't work  :(

The SB310 also came with a home made compressor pedal so if the person that built that is someone from here, good job with the compressor  ;) I have no idea what it is but I'll look at that also

Actually I have it tuned for 2 lower strings, in the style of Tosin Abasi. Standard Tuning would be F# B E A D G B e, but I have the F# dropped down to an E (like dropped D tuning) to give me easier extended chord voicings, so it's E B E A D G B e.  :icon_twisted:

The string spacing is definitely tighter than any 6 or 7 string I've played, and it's a 27" scale (to keep the low string tension) so it's taking a bit of getting used to, but I really enjoy it!

Haha... I got another one!

SX Furrian VWH. Well worth the $94. Full review here.

I also did a review of the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale from a few posts back. It's right here.

Here's the SX after stripping the vintage carrot neck, smoothing the pickguard, swapping a microphonic pickup, sheilding, and a setup:

I love them! I was scared of getting it done until I aquired the Yngwie Strat but then fell in love. Besides looking cool it really helps not having wood slowing your fingers down giving better grip and string bend control, especially for vibrato. At first it feels wierd like the strings are walking on a tight rope but that is just an illusion. After all the frets are still there and that is what you fret notes on not the wood. You quickly get over it.
