adding another boost channel to red llama

hey guys..
i'm going to try out the red llama next.  I've been listening to sound clips and i'm really excited to try it out!

one thing i was thinking would be cool would be to add another gain/boost channel.  I read this here in one of the threads-

"A very nice mod is to make a footswitchable 'extra channel' by adding the 10M resistor in the first feedback loop like in the Tube Sound Fuzz."

i'm looking at markm's layout, and comparing this to the Tube Sound Fuzz in anderton's EPFM.  R6 in mark's layout is labeled 1M, but there is an asterisk... in the book, R6 is 10M.  I know that the Red Llama is a slightly modded version of anderton's tube sound fuzz- is this one of the changes?

If so, could i switch out that resistor with a 1M pot for the extra channel?  would this make sense?

I'm actually doing a layout for the Red Llama that should fit in a 1590B well but I haven't tested it out yet, I've got two finals on Monday and Tuesday first  :icon_rolleyes:.

I would guess so. How much effect does this button have on the original Tube Sound Fuzz?

I would recommend just putting a clean-ish boost in front of it. Then you've got two effects in one, as well as a channel to boost the red llama. You can run either effect separately, but when you turn them both on together, the boost kicks the Llama's front end and gives it that extra push you're looking for.

My favorite so far has been an AMZ minibooster running into the Llama.

Its pretty easy to tap an unused inverter section of the 4049 to use as a clean boost. Look atTim Escobedo's cmos boost for ideas. He uses a 4069, butit will give you the idea :)

thanks A.C.!  I'll have to check it out!

it's funny that you guys are replying to this post.... i can't remember when i actually put it up!

This works... sort of.  I doesn't provide much of a boost it just gives more distortion.  And I've found that if you have the gain all of the way up to begin with, it doesn't make much difference, because all it does is completely max out the gain.  So it's not good for a "solo" type boost, but it does work for a hi/lo distortion feel.  I think tapping another inverter for a clean boost is a better way to go.

I just built a red llama + the amz mosfet boost, with a switch to change the order of the effects. You can either boost the signal before the llama to get more gain, or change the order to boost the signal after the llama. I thinks it works quite well..

Which sounds better? AMZ+RL or RL+AMZ?

AMZ+RL adds more gain, but there isn't much change if you already have a lot of gain. Also there is no change in volume, so RL+AMZ would probably work better for a solo boost, as this boosts the volume as well. I haven't had time to really play around with the effects, as I completed it yesterday.

Hey. Any chance of a uploaded sound file pretty please?
