tin-can chip pinouts?

Hey all,
I can't seem to find any information on what the pin order is on those old tin-can chips, like the lm709. there's a little notch in front of one of the cans, which I might assume is 1, and then it goes counter-clockwise a bit like an ordinary chip. I'd rather make sure though, so I don't fry them if I'm wrong.
