This was one with the putrid chips in it, and my buddy had never used the distortion, because it was so horrid.  I put a milled socket in, changed one of the clipping diodes, replaced the 510k resistor with 620k, did the "more max" and "less min" changes, replaced the NP elec, and secured the DC adapter jack.  It has become a fully usable pedal now.

I was a bit floored at how much was on that board, however.  There were six transistors and numerous diodes scattered around.   :icon_question: :icon_question: :icon_question:

What the heck are all of these extra parts for?  http://www.schematicheaven.com/effects/ibanez_ts9_tubescreamer.pdf

it has electronic switching, and a lot of those parts are part of the buffer/switching...

Yep... pretty much the whole bottom half of that schematic is the switching and output buffer. The top half is where all the fun is... ;)
I am not responsible for your imagination.

Aha, that makes sense.
