Any good DIY standalone guitar preamps out there?

OK OK, I sort of missed the point of the thread with my start from scratch attitude.
I hope this makes up for it:

Crate Flexwave 5 Dirty Stage with EQ and active 1Khz bandpass :icon_twisted:
Add a cab simulator type stage then feed it to your power amp, it's one hell of a circuit when voiced to your liking.

That crate schematic might sound OK because it looks like it uses circuit fragments that you see in some  musicman solid state preamps look at what is in the f eedback network of the first opamp.

Q2 looks to be a reduce the gain to 1 switch and Q5 looks to be used to switch in an eq change with the network at the output.

I'd say you've got one heck of an eye there Gus. I was a little iffy about sharing it for worry that the guys at Crate might get p.o.'d but then I thought you know what, I guarantee the guy that designed this based it off of a previous design, why not share it for someone else to base their own concept off of. It definitely sounds better than OK with the right overdrive, some better op amps and a good cab voicing circuit. Until I perfect my own distortion circuit suitable for a preamp that overdrives nicely, my Crate Flexwave 5 head, which I've modified quite extensively, is my main rig.
