Currently my rig is as follows -

Guitar-V847-Ge Axis Face-NPN Boost I also have a rangemaster built but It isnt really what i'm after - now I've had a jam with the band using it.

Now I want a nice Overdrive, it would be nice if it had drive and tone control. It doesnt need to be capable of distortion - just pushing my tube amp or simulating the OD itself without being too loud compared to the amp level.

I want a drive that does gritty ACDC kinda drive, but also smooth light sounds for cleaner playing.

I have a few Ge Trannies I could try in there aswell - I'd rather not have to hunt down IC chips - so something using mainly Transistors or Diodes for light clipping would be cool.

If you have built a drive and just gone WOW, I'd like to hear about it -

Thanks!

i have to get my hands on some of your germs.  very soon.
Anywhere but here, that would seem odd...

I'm very happy with my Zakk Wylde OD. It does cool southern rock sounds, plus you can use it to boost another drive, or push an amp.

For ACDC, you may like something of a 'cruncher' such as Dr. Boogie or BSIAB.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

The Highway 89?  It cleans up well with the guitars volume.  It's also in your face OD when you need it.

I can't really get my BSIAB to do AC/DC well. I've heard that the 18 does it -> http://www.runoffgroove.com/eighteen.html (listen to the first sound clip near the end)

My goto box is the OD 250. Works well with your guitar's volume and tone and its easy to mod. It gets some really great hard rock tones through my HRD.

It uses a lm741 though.

i'm going to start Doug Hammond's HIghway 89.... from the sound clips i've heard, it's sounds amazing

I don't know how the Hwy89 compares to the BSIAB 2 or the Dr.Boogie since I haven't built those yet.  The Hwy89 to me is an awesome OD.  Basic Audio has some nice clips of it on the sound samples page.  Doug H. says it's not a high gain OD but I think it is nice and loud.  The tone pots aren't super responsive but do the job.  For a fairly easy circuit to build it sounds huge.

Hi David

I would reccomend the BSIAB.
it is a distortion, but it is (to me) a very good overdrive too.
on a clean amp it can do the AC/DC sound without the need to push the preamp tubes.

i love the HW89 a lot too, but only for lead work.

..my vote for the BSIAB

oldrocker

I've gotta build me a BSIAB soon.  I hear so many good things about it.

enigmur,

although it requires an IC, I would strongly suggest you to build a TS-9. I love mine (mods: 0.1u input cap and asymmetrical clipping by adding a Ge diode) and I think its reputation is a proof to its quality.
It does the overdrive thing *PERFECTLY*!

I seriously recommend a Box Of Rock clone.

No ICs, does mild OD to distortion and th boost option opens it up.

The BOR is on some of the Japanese sites as well FYI.
I'd be careful though as I have my doubts about whether the schem is correct..... although, I could be wrong about that.
