Balance and Compensation?

When I bought some IC's recently, I got slipped one of the wrong kind.  An NTE894M.  I looked up its Data Sheet and it's a low noise single-opamp, but it has pins labeled "Balance", "Compensation" and "Balance/Compensation".  What are these pins used for?

This part is basically a re-badged NE5533.

The balance adjustment is for nulling out DC offsets (if these are a problem for you - generally ignored for most AC stuff).
The compensation facility allows addition of an external frequency compensation capacitor to improve or guarantee stability in unity gain amplifier configurations.
