slightly OT, ok, totally OT  ;D

i just got 2 new Lil'Texas and i put them in my peavey Classic 74 (the weak point in the amp!)

1-there's a red dot on one leg on each speaker, is it the +  (i guess so but want to be sure)?

2-can i crank the amp right away on next rehearsal or do i have to do some kind of break in (i don't care about breal in for sound quality, i just don't want to blow them...) (amp is 50W  speakers 125W each...) but the little bastard is LOUD... :D

you can check polarity with a battery, I use a 9v, but if you want to go easy(no harm done) you can use a 1.5, but I never tried, so I guess it depends on the rigidity of the spkr cone sytem.

So basically I contact the 2 leads on the spkr with the + and _ of battery. If the spkr moves inward, the the phase is reversed, It has to move outward from the spkr magnet, then all you do is check which lead goes to the + on the battery and that is your + on the spkr.

Cheers

Main deal is if they're in phase...but the red dot is almost always + on the speakers, on ones with no marking, so that they're in phase, I'll attach a 9v battery for a split second, if + pushes the cone out then that's it.
{When you're running more than one cabinet, starting with the first and last having the + of the amp go to red dot...makes it easier to keep speakers in phase with each other, flipping the phase of all speakers [still in phase with each other]..can't really tell any much difference there.
Dont 'connect' the battery, there's a chance the coil could become a 'heater coil'...'just touch it across the connection'...enough to make the speaker jump so you can tell which way.

Yer spozed to have 2x the speaker handling...er something like that, you have 5x...so even 1 should be safe.
Break-in for speakers is different than for piston engines etc., the cones suspension stiffness, after being played a while, loosens up to allow slightly 'less constricted' cone excursions.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

It took me a while to break in my emi Wizard.  I played through it for a few hours a day for a week and it still sounded fairly stiff although it wasn't bad.  I finally recorded a loop on my digitech gnx3 and let it repeat while I left the house for the day.  Now it's fine.

if i'd do that i'd come home to some angry neighbors...  ;D

thanks for the tips..!

after loading a cabinet i bought ($50) locally with 4x Eminence Modelling 12" speakers ($50 / piece) i've decided to never purchase a cabinet again.

The cabinet can handle 480 watts, has about 102 dB/SPL efficiency, sounds great, and cost virtually nothing. gotta love it.  :icon_mrgreen:

i tried it loud this afternoon...  :icon_twisted:
it's a new amp now, the old, dried up, mid-70's peavey speakers didn't sound half as loud as the eminence... lots of tight, punchy bass... at 4 pounds each my twin might get the same treatment  :D

i think speaker quality is often overlooked by most guitarist but i can see what an improvment it makes (much like good skins on a drum can make a crappy drum sound like thunder, (according to my drummer...))

can't wait till next rehearsal!!

PS: when putting my DMM on the jack (2 X 8 ohms plugged in parallel to make 4 ohms) i notice the reading keep moving in a repetitive pattern without setteling (it does that on any speaker i test??)

I'm still waiting on my speakers :(

I just changed my old Peavey 412 for an oldish Laney 212 that looks like a mini 412 with the Celestions frontmounted horizontally. I'd never seen one before, but it's light and it rocks even harder than the PV.
