You would have to be very creative. It's like saying how can I write a melody that's completely new and has never been written before?

You start with studying what is available and understanding it before you can know what is really new.

Writing a song's a good metaphor - it is kinda like that. Ya do a 12 bar blues or a 16 bar blues -  ya gots your Ross/MXR/DOD250 distortions and ya gots your Tubescreamers/Rats/Shredmasters. Mostly we do variations on classic themes.

Study existing designs to see what's done and get afeel for how they change the sound and experiment from there.

It'll be way hard to do something completely new. Or at least completely new that anyone will want to play through.
