I'm planning on building a Ruby amp, since i've heard so much good about it. And i want to make it permanent attached to a speaker. Does any of you have any SMALL speaker recommendations for use with the Ruby? It'll need to sound pretty ok, and of course be small.

Thanks,

I think with the Ruby and the other gems most people just go with whatever they can find.
If you want to spend money then you should investigate speakers with high sensitivity - these will give you way more volume. And, you could use it with other amps in the future.

Thanks, i believe i will try some crappy computer and audio speakers i've got lying around, then turn to Mouser maybe. They have some interesting small speakers there that wpuld be worth a try. Cheap too!

I tried a bunch with my Ruby.  Even some fancier ones from digikey.  The one that sound best was from a wall mount home intercom that i got a t junk shop that appears to to be from the 50's.  The finding what ever option seems the best to me.  I still haven't found a really good sounding small speak i think it is just psychics.

Speakers from auto stereos work fairly well.  Not as much balls as a 12"....but fine for living room.

salvages speakers outdid the puter speakers...
5''- 8'' is about the right size to get some bass, maybe smaller anything bigger can sound good but'll probably take more to power up, might not really get powered into speaker 'sweet spot'.
Mind ohmage, perhaps two will set proper ohmage.
Old broken in radio speakers from 50's - 70's [surely some later ones] actually had fine quality speakers, 'loose suspension' and light cones.

I saw  Clarion car speaker at a second hand shop.It stated 16Ohms and 20-85 watt.would it be a good choice? ???

Btw,computer speaker sux.

I like the old U shape magnet ones, and spending <much on anything, free is even better but further intbetween entries...
I just get something looks like it'd take it [or not] and try it out.
loose suspension and light cone...responsive speaker...what to look for.

Hey guys, I just found out that I have 1958 CTS speakers! that im using on my Ruby setup, these were in a Magnavox turntable portable kit. I did not know CTS made speakers!, they sound pretty good out of the enclosure, maybe a bit middish, I guess ill get a bit more low end once they are in the enclosure(they are 8 inches).
I tried some 4,5,6 inches, they all lacked the low end punch.
So just like the pots, if you see 137 stamped, with anothe number code...well its CTS!, sorry if its old news, I just found this out.

the cts's look like a great find.  I have had a lot of look with that kind of thing.

Hmmm... Bigger speaker does not usually need more power. What really matters is the sensitivity. Higher sensitivity means more volume for the same amount of watts. Bigger ones usually have higher sensitivity than small ones.

ive found some nice 8" 91db 8ohm PA speakers for $20 AUD each
might make a cabinet with them

I used a Celestion Truvox 510, 5" PA speaker. Works pretty good and ain't too expensive (around 30 bucks).

  Dass whu Time Taukum bout.
I have some very similar speakers I think they're the bees knees of little speakers for guitar.
As much as these little amps are becoming popular again, probably a speaker company reads this and produces a speaker...a speaker...so small..so good sounding...so sweet and powerful it sounds like a M-stak would if you could fit it in your bedroom, perfectly voiced to compliment any guitar sound..lol..so sensative yet so able to take 10w, designed and manufactured so amazingly...that I night think about trying one.

detachable tape recorder speaker (08 66). Tried some smaller, more modern ones first, but not going back now. Sounds really really good to me.

Actually for my Ruby I plug into a 12" stage monitor.  It sounds incredible for such a low powered amp.  I was playing through it one day when a friend stopped over.  The stage monitor was next to my big amp.  After a while I was done and unplugged the Ruby my friend had no idea that was not my big amp I was playing through.  As a practice amp the Ruby through a 12" speaker sounds better than my 15 watt 8" speaker amp.  I say go for a bigger speaker if you've got one laying around.

birt

i usually use it on a 4X12 greenback cab...

for salvaged speakers i'd go for old ones ('50 '60), they tend to sound better for guitar. expecially old alnicos if you can find them.

i bought a 0.5 watt little (not tiny though) speaker thinking that the ruby wouldn't output very much. i was expecting it to be something like the marshall micro amp.

http://www.marshallamps.com/product_range.asp?productRangeId=19.

it will drive that to distortion pretty easilly. so, don't get anything too tiny. maybe a few watts would be good?

The speaker holes are for the 8 inch spkrs....I might enlarge this opening for 10-12 inch spkrs!!!
Ill see after the build which one I like best from my other "closing doors" Ruby, Ill probably sell the other one!
Ill keep you guys posted on that!

Oh and please check out my Ruby sound clips on another post...http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=58575.0
tell me what you think....not the playing, but the tone!!!!....OK I can take comments on my playing, it does not matter, I play to make me happy, if anyone else happends to like it well thats the bonus!
Cheers
