In general, where do you guys buy your resistors and caps when you buy for more than one project. What i'm looking for is kits with the most used resistors and a kit with caps, one. I've seen some on ebay, but haven't come up with anything useful. Both "regular" and electrolytic caps are needed..

For resistors and caps I've used these guys :
www.fastcomponents.co.uk   ( UK )
Resistor pack, poly cap pack and electro pack are goodvalue.
I'm still getting through a 5000 resistor deal from ebay, about three years ago, the whole lot
was £12  !!!!!
Constantly running out of 1k/10k/100k/470k  !!!
smallbear also does packs and I use steve for almost everything else  www.smallbearelec.com  ( USA )

Thanks, i've actually bought from fast components before, i think. Did they have an eBay store? Anyway, i suppose they ship outside of the UK? Us norwegians live very "remote".  ;D

I've bought these a couple of times. Great value. Also check out their trim pots at 15 cents each.

Good thread; where was this last week? LOL  I just got a bulk of caps on Ebay, worked out to .08 ea.  265 values from .001 to .1, $25 US after shipping.  The guy selling them seems to run a store - I think they're out there a lot - his Ebay name is something like WestFloridaElectronics.   Try looking for him, maybe?

I tried Mouser, but they don't carry their small cap selection anymore.  They said they could special order one, but would need my name, add'y, credit card.  I didn't like that too much so passed...plus, theirs is $40!  And some other places I found only 'kit' from 1nf to 10 nf...not much selection there.

Thanks for all the replies.
The store at Futurlec seems really cheap, and has some exciting IC kits to... I think i'll buy some kits for there.  :)

Velleman has some nice resistor and cap assortments,

I've been bugging Steve Daniels at Small Bear to put together some sort of starter package for a while now, but an everything-I-need-to-get-started kit (passive components, semiconductors, perfboard, jacks, pots, etc) is kind of a tall order and takes up too much of his time to put together.  He does have some resistor and cap assortments, as well as a PCB-making kit, but nothing that might serve as a starting from scratch for $40 kit.  A pity, because it could probably be done.....if we could agree on what it needs to include,

my local shop (they have excellent deals on 1/4w carbon film resistors if you buy in 100s of each value)... www.esr.co.uk

I purchase components from Allied almost exclusively: http://www.alliedelec.com
I don't know about kits or assortments, but they have an excellent selection of quality components.
What I can't find at Allied, I can usually find at Mouser or DigiKey, and for parts specific to pedals (footswitches, odd transistors) I've had good luck with Small Bear.
Newark is another excellent source.

Bought one of these when I first start getting into this:

http://elexp.com/srp_qtr1.htm

I still have most of it.  Also bought their ceramic CAP set.

You got the info for Futurlec - just be aware of their "Long wait" shipping service - you'll get the stuff eventually.  Also, it helps to keep bugging them by email and such.  They haven't stiffed me yet (did 3 orders) but last order took about a month to show up.  First 2 were relatively quick - 1 or 2 weeks.

Also try Jameco and search for "grab bag" - I think this is the link:

http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/KeywordSearchResultView?langId=-1&krypto=9QxUbvV62961YRJKA5Tjfigbmq0yjWNPpou6pwdfhWtUG4%2F6vniMaP8GbXg%2FdhbeGzuweIjhtx0p%0D%0AjNrYcGOWEcErJ9wYvMwnQQyoYdQoFlYwbsI0iTBWzgRXYpkqym3aa7ax5u4DIvJPKlN%2Bw6CrIzw1%0D%0Au6yP%2B%2BKh%2FkfEtoRvHFVH1MnCEQkGE%2F4z9%2FLLM%2BZZ

I figured it like you did that I would buy a lot of the minor stuff in bulk and use it for various things.  It's worked out well - haven't bought many resistors or ceramic caps - just the odd values that I didn't have.  I figure by buying bulk I paid like less than 2 cents for most of the items each.  A lot better than buying them 1 or 2 at a time.

Hva med elfa? Jeg har kjøpt alt av motstander og kondensatorer der. Sånn prismessig tror jeg ikke det er helt galt..

When I started I got some of those Futurlec value packs.  They worked out well, just ran out of common values quickly.  Order from them if you dont mind waiting and not knowing when it will come in...  3/4 times they had superb service and pretty quick shipping.  My last order was a nightmare though it took more than 30 days and was missing components.  However, they sent the extra parts and another order I was going to make with no shipping costs.  The damn thing took like 4 or 5 days to get to me. (ftw?!)  Ebay has some nice deals here and there.

Mark--

It's an interesting idea, and I wish I had time to pursue it. The thing might be a kind of beginner's "lab" for pedal-building, maybe including a solderless breadboard strip, instruction manual, etc. But I just can't give it design-and-shopping time in the forseeable future. I have blown out my walls again and expanded into a large locker...too much going on, good news-bad news.

Oner thing I can suggest for those who want to roll-their-own assortments is those plastic organizer boxes, SKU 6010 and 6012 on the Stock List. If you are willing to give a little time to it, you can fill them with useful stuff for pretty cheep. The "Jewel" box is good for small quantities of caps, diodes, transistors, and the large one is configurable. I would like to also offer drawer-type organizers, but I need more storage space locally and have to fish for a Chinese source in order to keep them price-competitive.

the store i go to for electronics parts has bulk packs of metal film, and carbon film resistors, and the "ultimate resistor pack", alot of resistors!!! they say in the catalogue that with the ultimate resistor pack, "youll never be short of a resistor again!"
they also have packs for different types of caps from film, ceramic, mkt polyester/polypropylene, and electrolytic
www.jaycar.com.au
i dont know if they do international though
they might?!

When you do buy something like resistors, which are the values to get more of because they're used loads. I guess it'll be multiples of ten, right?

Blir nok Futurlec ja. Hadde ei sånn resistorpakke på Clas Ohlson faktisk, men slår ikke import.
