In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Ulysses is an Ancient Greek mythic hero.

I assume that the cartoon must be based on that character...

since i never had the chance to watch that show on tv, was it really similar to Homer's Odyssea?

Greek guy here, btw...

I was born in 1978 and I never saw that cartoon - never even heard of it! I was too busy watching garbage like "Dungeons & Dragons" or "Voltron". I still think that guy totally looks like the dude from Laibach - check 'em out!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_zA7nukoZA

James Joyce is great! I think Joyce, Dostoevski, and Faulkner are required reading for misfit troublemakers like me.

apparently he ended up getting an F as he wasn't really the most attentive pupil  :icon_razz:
but yeah, beyond his academic follys they've definitely made some interesting music that has had a pretty august influence on music in general and on the political scene in the country at the time. One of the few bands from this country that has an international reputation

soulsonic

They have had a very long and influential career. I think I understand many things, but I'm still not entirely sure I understand Laibach. .... It's hard to fit the pieces together in a way that makes sense to me. It seems alot of what they did was intended to shock and get people's attention. But what was their political motivation? I know Slovenian independence from the Soviet Union was a big part of it, but what else?

i was born in 1978 also. the difference being that i was born in australia. which meant that cartoons came here many years delayed. so an '81 cartoon prob played in '84-'85. then they repeated the same ones over and over because they were to cheap to subscribe to the whole series. same shit happens today. if anything is going to beat them in the ratings they stick a repeat on. eg, tonights episide of "House" was a repeat becasue the "FOOTY!"   ::) was on.

my favorites were astroboy and tranformers - i wouldnt miss them for the world and didnt care if it was a repeat. i was also into voltron, lost cities of gold, ulysses, and a whole bunch of others.. we didnt have dungeons and dragons.. it was prob shown here in the 90's - by which time i was no longer watching cartoons.. sent to boarding school.

yeah, I was a kid in australia in the early 90s and just caught the end of the Dungeons and Dragons cartoons. Transformers reruns as well.

Yugoslavia already stopped siding with the Soviet Union in the 50s
Tito died in 1980 and with the subsequent steady breakdown of the system all sorts of underlying tensions  began to surface (ethnic, religious, economic....everything) until the start of the 90s when Slovenia proclaimed independence with the other countries soon following. We just had 10 days of war, the others had to go through a few years of it :icon_neutral:
as far as I can understand them Laibach's principals are more political than nationalist, parodying all forms of totalitarianism by presenting themselves as super-totalitarian. This guy wrote a pretty good paper on them.

yeah...this thread has gotten pretty off topic.

soulsonic

"Cities of Gold" was a messed-up crazy-ass cartoon! Didn't they start getting into this weird alien subplot? That show was so damn weird! I'd almost like to find episodes of it again just to rewatch and try to make sense of it.

Thanks for the info Seljer! I was thinking Laibach was doing a parody of totalitarianism, but I was never sure why exactly. I think that paper clears alot of it up for me. Thanks.
