Hi
can anyone show me some ultimate BSIAB 2 mods for a Thicker and warmer tone?
I want to make the sound thicker (in my opinion it is a little bit thin) and then i would like more mids and les high end.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

#1
try increasing the input/output caps
a larger cap value yields more bass (thickness pretty much)
i would just put either a .1 uf or 1uf cap as the output and changing the input cap value to your liking

Thanks a lot! i'll try it
Are you sure it'll work?
Doesn't this mod chage the tone only without adding tickness?
I need tickness, not tone changing.
I say that 'cause i use this mod (the cap on the output) to change the tone of my RAT2.
Anyway, i'll try it.
Than you

i guess the question is what do you mean by thin/thick? those are words generally used to describe tone, if there is something else you need be more specific.

If by "warmer" you also mean more bass, I reccomend you to change C8 to 1u.
I found too much treble in the pedal also (at least with some amps) so what I did was adding a 22k resistor at the C8 side of the tone pot, to limit the maximum treble available and to have a more precise control with the tone pot over the "remaining" range.
I also used a 560p for C5, instead of 470p.

These are the results of the two mods:

Thank you shred, it helps a lot.
great sound, i'll try it asap.
Hey, how many fingers have you on your left hand? 12?
You are very fast and clean, wow!!!! ;D

Thank you! But actually I've not been totally clean in those clips!
I'm losing much of my technique, I'm only playing a couple of hours per week!

Just goes to show how much the sound of the pedal is dependent on the rig itself. Many people like to clip the caps at the end to brighten things up.
I do like the 560pf cap mod, I think the polystyrene caps sound beautiful. Clear and smooth. Micas have a bit of an edge on them.
Tweaking and tuning is part of what DIY is all about, IMO!

Shred, i made the mods, good sound, great tone (a little bit harsh according to me, I like creamy warm sound)
Maybe I can change output cap from 0,0022 to 0,1 micro and the input cap too. :icon_mrgreen:
WGTP, but does those mods fit to BSIAB2?
Schems seem to be different, or am I wrong?
Hope to hear from you two soon

Still harsh??? Strange...

I'm suspecting your gear is involved in the harshness: what kind of guitar and amp do you have? A single coil guitar + a solid state amp would probably sound harsh, this is true. Instead I have to keep my (modified, as you've seen) tone pot at max if I'm using my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with humbuckers!

Anyway, playing with those caps (I suggest you to concentrate on the output ones) is a good way to defeat harshness.

I use a Marshall JCM 800 tubes head and some Gibson LPs plus a 1985 (original not reissue) Kramer baretta 1
Harshness comes out when playing on first, second and third string (over 7 fret)
Maybe it's a problem of frequencies...

Mmm... are you sure the circuit is ok?
Try to triple check every solder joint (I know, it's a pain in the ass...), you might have something wrong in the circuit.

Alternatively you possibly set your clean sound way too clean, that is you cut too much mids and/or add too much presence to make it sound cleaner (I had this problem with my Marshall JMP-1 preamp, I had to switch to the "clean 1" channel, which is darker than the "clean 2", to use pedals). Does the problem happen with other overdrive pedals, as well?
Try to set a warm sound in the OD channel of your JCM with very little gain, and then add the BSIAB2 in front of it with not too much gain: it will probably make a lot of noise/hiss, but this allows you to distinguish a problem of the pedal from a problem of your clean sound settings. You might also try your BSIAB2 with another amp, if you have the possibility.

Last, but not least, you own a standard Marshall cab with G12T-75 speakers: in my opinion they are harsh no matter how you equliaze your sound. I solved the problem buying some Vintage 30s: they are THE guitar loudspeakers!

Hope this helps,

Giulio

I posted some of the mods I have made to one of my BSIAB2 boxes on this thread:

http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=41148.0

I like the original circuit just the way it was too, so I have a few - one is unmodified. I originally made these mods to adjust for different sets of gear.

HOTGUIT

Hi Mojo
Thank you for the mods.
I gonna try them asap.
I'll report progress on this thread.
Meanwhile Keep on rockin' ;D

Sorry, I was sort of being a smart a$$.  Both are dual mu-amp designs, but are otherwise different.  I thought it might give you some ideas to try   :icon_cool:
