Gain Pot Question... adding one

I would like to add a gain pot to the Firestarter OD. Here is the layout I'm using:

I tried just throwing a pot on the input, but i got no signal, so i assume the load is too high to pass. any thoughts?

the input should work fine...does the layout work when you ditch the gain pot ?

a different (and better) gain pot would replace R4 and have C3 coming off lug 2 to ground...see "Fuzz Face" for details.

hmm, yes the layout works fine with no gain pot on the input (guess i should mark it verified!) so do you mean something like this?

Also, say i wanted to add a BMP tone knob. in that case, lug 3 of the tone knob would go to the volume lug 3 pad, lug 2 of tone would go to lug 3 of volume, lug 2 of volume remains output, and lug 1 of both goes to ground, correct?
