so i was foolin' around with some booster circuits on the breadboard and thought i'd put my boss ce-3 compressor/sustainer in front just to see how they interacted. got one up that sounded great; loud, sparkley, slight bit of hair on it. sounded good with the compresser in and bypassed as well.

the next day, i take the compressor out of the signal chain to do some serious tweaking and the booster sounds like ass; wooly and flubby, with no top end. so i put the boss compressor back in and left it bypassed...sounded great again.

so that tells me that there is something about the buffer in the boss circuit even when bypassed that has the magic ingredient here. make any sense?

so the $50,000 question is what does that buffer look like schematically and is it something i can hack onto the front of this booster curcuit, or will any of the other handy buffers posted online work as well?

thanks for the tip. i rigged up the amz jfet booster and was pretty impressed with the results. it smoothed out the little annoying bit o' flab at the bottom end of my utility boost and made it a bit brighter....nice. only thing is that it cuts the gain down just a bit. its plenty loud enough, just not getting as much drive as i'd like for that "heavy clean" sound i covet so much. recomended tweaks?

yeah, the boss pedals all have buffers that effect the signal in bypass mode. they are pretty decent ones too.

maybe give this a quick read also?

there's j201 and opamp buffers there, with really nice explanations and how it all works (helped me anyway :)    )
