So (very basically) a TS if you have a tube amp and a tube pedal if you don't have a tube amp.

How about a TS into a ECC83?  Would that give a nice sound?

Dirk,
you mean TS -> ECC803 -> Solid State Amp?
ECC803 is a European version of 12AX7

Thanks,
Roger

Actually it's ECC83 = 12AX7, ECC803 is similar tube (I think JJ makes them)

I use stompboxes in a home studio environment.
And having no tube amp, I asked myself if it would be a good idea, if you put a TS into a tube preamp.
I have some ecc83/12ax7 tubes (broken Lafayette), so it would be relatively simple for me to make a tube preamp.
Or do you need the distortion of the power tubes. And can you "recreate" poweramp distortion with (a) penthode(s) in the distortion stage.

pre-amp distortion, and power amp dist are two diff animals.  Pre-amp dist can be kinda buzzy and artificial sounding, to me anyway.  There are however low wattage amp designs that use 12ax7 types for output tubes that supposedly sound good.  That might work for your home studio environment.  Or just get yourself an AC4, or Champ and push it hard w/ a booster!! :icon_twisted:

Guys once i have TS-8080 clone built is there any reason to try out EH Hot Tubes clone? Do they sound different?
Thanks :)

snoof

The hot tubes looks like a combo of a TS type thing and a 4049 inverter for the clipping, so I'd bet it would sound different.  The red llama/tube sound fuzz sounds different to me than a TS clone.

I thought the difference between pre amp distortion and power amp distortion was because pre amps use triodes in single ended configuration and power amps use penthodes in ballans configuration. So if you make a amp stage with penthodes (ef86) in balance, then you would be able to get the nice power amp distortion (excluding tranny and speaker distortions). This is of cause only my theory, so.

how different  about TUBE REACTOR and HOT BOX???

bancika

you mean "what's the difference"?
TR has less fuzzy more smooth sound (220K on second plate reduced to 100K), 3 band tone controls, little more bass thanks to 1uF bypass caps...can't remember anything else changed there...DC heaters, but that doesn't count.

If you are referring to the preamp of a tube amp, SRV did that, along with many others. I think it's a great combo.  :icon_cool:

Oh yes, that's a classic, recently tried my 808 clone into my H&K Metal Master ( set for medium gain ) and it sounds
superb, I can make a sound sample in a few days - away from home at the 'mo !
H&K has a 2 x 12AX7 preamp into tranny 4 watt amp/red box speaker sim output and is a GREAT box :D

Do you mean the H&K Cream Machine? I have one lying around somewhere. Haven't used it for years.
It is a complete tube amp with speaker output.
They also made the crunch machine and metal machine.

They may have used a few names, Cream machine has 12ax7 and an EL84 I think
Blues master and metal master have 12ax7 pre's and tranny outputs.
Very good quality boxes ( of course, 'cos they are German ! ) more gain from the last
two but Cream machine should sound great, dig it out and put some new valves in it !!
Complete small amps with speaker out and sim/headphone outs too .... under rated IMO
