Hi
Concerning the validity of this statement:
QuoteAnd Class D shreds logs then reassembles them as chipboard...

Many of us with reasonably solid experience of guitar amplification (27 years in my case) can see the relevance of this comment, Mr/Dr Palms.

IMO it holds true for the average class D amplifier out there. When I last looked (a few years ago), Class D amps were unsuitable for use in quality guitar amps. I suspect that little has changed.

I think that if you were bright and eloquent and well informed, you might have got away with being rude, Mr Palms.

There are a few other elements to consider in the class of an amp, such as the use of a negative feedback loop. In my opinion, these days class A vs. class B etc. is more of a marketing tool. So many guitarist say "I only play class A amps" when in reality they probably don't know what it means, and there are plenty of AB amps you could put in front of them that would blow them away. Don't buy based on class, buy based on the sound. Also, I'm sure there's info at GeoFX and you called also read Guitar Amp Handbook by Dave Hunter (easy read, good info). There are a thousand elements that make for good tone, so don't just get hung up on one like operating class. Good luck!
If it ain't broke...   ...it will be soon.

dude, that shows a remarkable insight into SMPS.

So... other than reading comprehension, what's your ___ problem?

I'm sure that you are aware that the post "seemed" to be posted in a "sarcastic manner". At least thats the way it looks to the casual observer.

QuoteWhy do you hang around here... ..........REMOVED --------?

I don't think it's reasonable to automatically assume that a person who worked in a "jellybean factory" (or any industry other than electronics, for that matter) wouldn't have anything worthwhile to say here . Somebody's job doesn't necessarily tell you how much they know about a subject outside their profession. For instance, my father owns a welding company, but he holds degrees in Nuclear Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and has his pHD in Business and Industry.

Just a thought. Anyway, have a great day !

Hey Roger,

I'm back from vacation.   :icon_biggrin:

Solid state and tube amps can have nearly identical configurations, at least as far as classifications A, A/B, and C go.

Pedallove is probably right about yours being an integrated amp chip.  Older SS amps often use discrete, but the newer ones (like a Line 6 I recently looked into) use amps chips.

It's possible to build some great-sounding class A solid state amps though.  If you're interested, look at Nelson Pass's Zen amps here:

http://www.passdiy.com/amps.htm

I've never heard of anyone using these for guitar, but I bet they'd work well. . . .

Regards,
Joe

Nelson Pass rules!  I have some Threshold CAS-2 amps (for home stereo and recording) that sound amazing.  There is also an old article that he did on a DIY bipolar class A amplifier.  He is very free with his knowledge, and did some DIY stuff for the masses.

Threshold stuff is sweet!!! One of the first serious hi-fi systems I ever heard had a Threshold amp.... and Magnepan speakers! I had a pair of Magnepans, but they got old and torn up.... :icon_cry:

Do I have your Magnepans?  I got mine dirt cheap at a Hamfest because it was a "Cat or the speakers" after the cat scratched the Magnepans to hell.  Sent them to Magnepan and got them completely redone for $300, love them as a junk collector there is no horizontal surface to put crap on.

I had a summer job at Polk Audio in college, they had the Threshold room with the monoblocks that you can "weld" with.  Amazing amps.
