I've just started to play around with op amps (so far mainly the 386 for my Ruby projects), and I'm about to order some from Smallbear.
Can someone suggest some essential IC's which it is always nice to have at hand ?

Well going from Smallbear stock list the ones I think you should grab are TL072, TL074, and NE5532. For playing around with more classic circuits the 741 and 4558 are fun.

Don't forget a couple of TL071's, single opamps, for those "1 opamp only" circuits. Those unused sections are wasteful, he he.   It is a more high-fidelity OA than the 741.
