Hi guys. Here's a couple photos and a drawing of the infamous DOD Buzz Box:

I have one with a non functioning battery hook-up. Adapter power works fine. haven't opened it up yet......

soulsonic

Do those things sound cool? I'm a big Melvins fan.

Seems I recall Buzz Osborne saying it was supposed to based on the MXR Blue Box but that he thought it sounded more like a vacuum cleaner.

soulsonic

Coming from him, it's hard to tell if that's supposed to be a positive or negative comment. :icon_lol:

i recall reading King Buzzo's comment about the vacuum cleaner. I think it was a negative comment, he was incredulous that his tone was perceived to be so "out-there". He also mentioned that his broke and he couldn't be bothered to buy a new one....

soulsonic

Yeah, his usual tone is pretty much a right-on heavy chunky Les Paul/Marshall thing.... real classic stuff. Sometimes of course he'll use some weird crazy effects, but that's not what you'd consider his "signature" tone. To me his signature tone is just a heavy rockin' sound.

Thanks for those pictures Dan.  Have you made a version from your layout, out of curiosity?

No. Actually, I have not even looked hard enough to ferret out what's going on in there. Have not played through it either!

So ashamed...

the buzz box is a high gain noisy -2 octave fuzz pedal which was discontinued from DOD
its highly sought after by Harsh Noise makers (such as myself) like the DOD meat box
its a rare one
very chaotic pedal, for noisy people it is
:D
...i want one

Never truly understanding the appeal of the Buzz Box in its raw form ???, I discovered a very simple mod that enables it to behave more like a Blue Box :icon_idea:.  The "Heavy" control now sets the level of the sub-suboctave from non-existent to pretty much all of the signal, with USABLE levels (like an equal mix with the distorted sound) in-between.  Much more useful (for my purposes, anyway :icon_cool:), though such a change is probably sacrilege to the true noise musicians among us  :icon_idea::icon_wink:.

Btw: Any sound clips of the Buzz Box around?

@ambulancevoice: I had a Meat Box once. The EQing was funny, but it was noisy.
Call me Johann.

Ha, just tried it. Unless I messed something up in my examinations, this thing sounds way broke. The 3 knobs on the right ( Buzz Saw Thrust) are a decent distortion. The first third of the "Heavy" control is O.K., after that, this does become the worst POS I ever heard. Funny.

I used to play with a guy that used a Buzz Box. Sounded like a chainsaw cutting through a running motorcycle. I own a Meat Box, the thing will destroy you speakers and your eardrums, ridiculous subharmonics. I remember reading a interview with Masami Akita(Merzbow) where he said that he used both pedals, so you can imagine what they are capable of doing.

Solidhex

The Buzz Box was a combination of a DOD Grunge distortion and MXR blue box. You can hear Buzz using a MXR Blue Box at the beginning of Charmicarmicat on the Eggnog ep.

yeah, its no surprise that when you turned up the heavy is started to sound terrible
the heavy knob also dials the 2 octaves in, which makes it really splattery and sh*t

yeah, ive heard that he used a meat box for his noise
most likely his old analog days
though he may use it for his digital stuff too, cause any harsh noise made on computer always sounds thin, and lacks the warm low end and thickness of analog, so the meat box would be good for it

I remember trying one out in a crowded music store once upon a time. The sales guy kept trying to get me to turn DOWN the heavy knob. I think i was the only one in the store who liked the sound of it......

Solidhex

Yeah

The in the song Charmicarmicat on Eggnog (Melvins) Buzz tunes his low E down to the A an octave below his regular A string. Couple that with a Blue Box with the blend knob set all the way to the 2 octave below side you'll be getting some gnarly low octave noise...

Joy. Now I can trace the board and make a clone. Thanks.
