hi i built a tube screamer and i'm just curios to play a bit with the opamp.

now i founded a TS922, can i use that in place of the 4558? do someone ever tried it?

GibsonGM

I believe you can try any opamp you like, as long as the voltage ratings and pinouts are correct.  Go Google and find a data sheet for the TS922, compare the supply voltage and pinout - if they are the same, give it a try, you might like it!

Here is some great info on opamps genreally used in ts-9 if you think of swapping others too.

I don't know as I agree with some of the statements there but, I suppose it's a good starting point.
NE5532This is a very popular chip with pedal modders.   :icon_lol:

cool then i'll check those, around i got a NE5532, a TL072 and a 4558DD and of course the 4558D, which is already inside the pedal (it's a fulltone bassdrive clone, look in the picture thread to see a pic of it)

There was a post someone made not too long ago where they built a TS and made recordings of about 11(?) different op-amps. To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between any of them, even that high dollar Burr Brown.  :icon_confused:

Some chips hiss a lot (e.g. 4558s).  The TL072 is quiet and the NE3552 is even better.

Do any of the other differences exist?  That's like asking "Do flying saucers exist?"  :icon_wink:

Yes, it was very hard to tell any differences even after downloading and listening on some VERY expensive
headphones !! .... there were a couple of subtle things though  :icon_wink:

For the "classic" TS sound and better noise specs try the RC4559 from smallbear I think, also 5532 and LM833
are good options, however - once again it's all probably TOO subtle once you're at a gig in front of a cranked amp
with limited bandwidth anyways !  :icon_rolleyes:
For pure "mojo" nonsense, I'd stick with the 4558D ..... :icon_mrgreen:

it's so odd cause the 4558D, which i'm using, comes form an ibanez soundtank! i think it was a TM5 trashmetal, what an awfull fx...

Oh yeah. I bought what was supposed to be a TS5 Tube Screamer off of Ebay. I plugged it in and wow - way hotter than a TS. I opened it up and it was the pcb for the soundtank heavy distortion pedal in the TS5 case. It had the 4558D in it, but I thought it sounded like garbage. :D

Absolutely. People still think that's the holy grail, no matter what you tell them. :)

Ooooh boy....  swapping opamps in the 808 type circuit can get out of hand.  Me wasted too much time carefully listening to different opamps in there.  I'm getting a mc33178 (zakk wylde od), tlc2262(sans amp), jrc062(is it different from the TI? hmmm..) KA1458 and MC1458 soon.  Does it sound better with or without the buffers?  Tantalum, or class3 ceramic?  Maybe both.  Tweak listen tweak listen tweak listen...
