One of my fav sounds on my TCE Stereo Chorus Flanger is the modulation, and I've been thinking it would be cool to build a little bitty modulator I could squeeze on my board (my TCE isn't part of my gigging rig).

Anyone have any opinions on a good modulator schematic that will let me control oscillation speed and effect mix?

"Why can't I do it like that?"

The pitch modulator setting in the TC is just taking the dry signal away. You can build any chorus pedal and just take the dry signal out of the final mixing stage and voila!

Hm, I didn't think about that (obviously).

What I'm wanting to do is warp the sound like an old record or victrola with as few control as possible. The more I think about pitch modulation, though, it seems like it may be too consistent and patterned. I guess there's not a really good way to get random "warpiness", though.

Rodgre

You can get a semi-random warpiness by mixing two LFOs together, set out of sync with each other. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but I've had good luck doing it this way.

A good chorus circuit, or any delay with modulated delay time will get your this effect. Like I said, just take away the dry signal. The higher the quality of delay circuit, the better the fidelity, of course. Whereas one might like the delay signal of a chorus to be band-limited and slightly darker than the dry signal for a warm chorus sound, take away the dry signal and it might be too dark and muddy for ya.

the psycho lfo is pretty good for this application...although you could probably get away with using trimpots instead of pots for less controls.  i think the best way to get the warp-ey boards of canada my bloody valentine old record sound via pedal is to use multiple oscillators controlling a single modulation circuit.  probably using a few in parallel and a few to oscillate the other oscillators would get the best sound.  also, you probably want to set most of them to go as slow as possible for the least amount of audible consistency...in my experience, two lfos is not enough to get that sound...
