Orange Squeezer distortion

I've built the OS from GGG and instead of creamy compression all  i get is chunky ( not entirely unusasble) distortion. The volume affects just that and the 10k pot seems to make no difference at all. Any thoughts?

I also built the OS and to me it seems to be that it clips very easily, not a clean compressor IMO. I could use it almost clean with my volume knobs almost to 0%, if there were a way to eliminate distortion from the circuit it would make me happy too

I rememeber that I had to do a lot of tweaking on the bias trimpot to make it sound good.
