Can a closed jack be wired as a stereo input jack?

The point in case is, due to size restrictions, I have found that the only jack that appears to fit in the particularly small enclosure I`m using is a closed jack rescued from a malfunctioning boss pedal. Problem is, despite my research, I haven`t been able to find an answer to the aforementioned question. All I need to do is sort out this little issue so I can complete the pedal I`m working on.

I have enough understanding of how closed jacks work to know that they can be wired as open mono jacks but not enough to know whether or not they can be wired as an input. Hope this makes sense.

Makes perfect sense and the short answer is unfortunately "No".  If you had the "right" needlenose pliers and could do some artful bending of the 3rd (default hot) contact, then maybe you could make it stereo.  Trouble is, it is normally just a straight piece of metalwith a small bump that the tip contact touches when not pushed out of the way by the phone plug.

Not the answer I was hoping for but thanks all the same. I`ll have a look into the "artful bending" idea.

If your closed jack is a stereo jack, then of course you can wire it for stereo. If it's a mono jack, then of course you can only use it for mono. Or did I misunderstand the question somehow?

Put in as stereo plug and measure the contacts with your multimeter - then you'll see if it has 2 seperate lugs for stereo operation or if its just a switched mono jack.

Besides: if you use a switched stereo jack for the input you can wire the switching-contact to ground.
Now the pedal input is grounded if you remove the plug - really usefull when the output is still plugged into an hot amp.
