      Hi everyone

i just entered the world of pedal modding (not that i know what and why....i am just followinf instructions at the moment) and my first attempt was the monteallums boss BD2 H2O mod and the boss CS3 opto mod. The result and the sound after the mod was just AWESOME.

What i plan to do now is try and do by myself the keeley standard mod (NOT the fuzz freak)to the bd2 and compare the result to the monteallums mod but from what i found there are some ways of doing it that contradict each other......The one listed on his website says to:

D3  Change this 1SS133 to a different (1N4002) diode for asymmetrical clipping. This adds second order harmonics. This adds to the tube type sound. I like the sound of this change.

D7 D8 D9 and D10 Change 2 of of these diodes from 1SS133 to a single 1N4002. More second order harmonic distortion. Although the change is slight, I like it. We actually take out one of the two pairs and replace it with a single 1N4001.

C1, C7, C6, C12, C13, and C15 Change this electrolytic capacitor to a 10uF Non-polarized caps. Non-polarized caps sound better . I like these anywhere there is signal coupling at this high a value.

C14 Increase input coupling capacitor value to 0.1uF for increased bass response from your guitar.

C100 Here is where we can affect the tone control. I prefer a little more lower-midrange and bass frequencies through the tone section. You can increase the lower frequencies by increasing the capacitor value to 0.033uF. Install a switch to add a 0.068uF cap in parallel with this value for the Phat Mode!

While on other i have seen you just have to change some capacitors and no diods at all.......:

C 1, C15, C6, C13, C7   10UF TANTALUM
C 14, C34   .1UF METAL FILM
C 36, C35   .047 METAL FILM
C 20, C25   100PF SILVER MICA
C 21, C23   47PF SILVER MICA
C 26   220PF SILVER MICA
C 100 (ON TONE POT
CIRCUITBOARD )   .033UF, .068UF FOR PHAT SWITCH
D 9   INSTALL JUMPER AT D9

Now from my limited knowledge diods are really important to the sound so which one should i follow?

I would imagine that the one that Keeley has on his site is the correct one. :icon_biggrin: Though it's possible that he's changed his mod and both are correct.

But the second mod has asymmetrical clipping too, so the only difference is the type of diode on one side. I imagine the difference is really subtle.

Where do you buy these 10 uF non polarized caps ?
Aren't they huge ?

5mm x 11mm, which is the same size as polarized electrolytics of the same value.

A 10uF poly film cap would be huge. And expensive.

Changing those 10uf electro,s to 1uf NP polys would work fine too.
Same 4 x 11 mm size as well.

How does this work? What are those capacitors doing that you can just drop their value like that without changing the sound?
