So, I bought them cool looking knobs over at maplin

Now the problem is that I can't find any pots with 6mm shaft. The ones that I have found are all 1/4"  (6,3mm) .

Can somebody tell me where I might find some 16mm pots with 6mm shaft? This is a big problem that needs to be solved today, since I need to build 2 pedals by our gig the 13th!

Well this... this is just silly... this can't fit in a 1590B... can it? And you're not even using SMD you mad man!

They're meant to fit on 6mm pots with ridges on the shaft like these .
They've got ridges on the inside of the hole, but if you get a 6mm drill bit you can shave the ridges off then you can force them on to normal 6mm pots, that's what I do.
Maplin sell 6mm pots http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ITAG=SPEC&ModuleNo=2203&doy=30m9#spec.
I guess if you got a 1/4" drill bit and were careful you could enlarge the hole so they would fit on 1/4" shafts.

knobs tend to come in metric and imperial, and suit their relative pot. the kind that you have would be metric, like the pot in the image above. the imperial ones come with a D shaft and the knobs will often have a grub screw to hold to a fixed position or will have a moulding to the D shape.

do they still have a firm grip if you drill them a bit? and it seems like quite a labour intensive job to drill 34 knobs.

No idea on where to buy the splitted shaft pots?

They grip Ok me, if you twist them really hard they will rotate on the shaft but they're fine for normal use. If I was selling pedals I wouldn't do it but for personal use they're fine.
Banzai sell split shaft pots, you might want to check that they are 6mm though. http://www.banzaieffects.com/Mono-Split-Shaft-c-399.html

i would have thought that everyone would sell the pots? maybe things are different overseas?

I believe they do have some 6mm pots at Banzai.com. Based in Germany, a great company.

They do. The last load of split-shaft pots I bought was from Banzai.

Alps pots are 6mm, at least the ones I use are, 6mm "d shaft" type.

Well I'm in Australia, and I buy bulk lots (1,000) via Tenrod Australia, the local Alps distributors.
For small quantities, Jaycar have a range of 9mm square pots - I don't know the manufacturer - with metric spline shafts that I expect would fit those knobs.
Altronics have what appear (in the catalog) to be 9mm 'snap-in' pots with the splined shaft.
