depends what you mean by "psychedelic"...

a lot of US 60s garage/psych bands would be using the Maestro Fuzztone or Fuzzrite in '66, then they'd have a choice between Ge + Si Fuzz Faces  + various Tonebenders from '67 ish onwards. Brit acts would have the latter ones a bit earlier. My history is a bit (ahem) fuzzy, but that would roughly be the order
as the music got mushier and druggier, the guitar sound took a back seat to organ sounds and studio tricks IMO.

I built my first Fuzz Face (Ge) a week ago, and I like it, but it's hard to think of it as 'psychedelic' - have a look at the Strawberry Alarm Clock fuzz thread too http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=61556.0

Also, don't forget that by the nd of 60's transistor amps have hit the market. I mean, listen to the Big Brother and the Holding Factory's first album. I seriously doubt that's tube amps. Get a cheap transistor amp, run it into a big speaker cabinet, like an open back 2*12. Get a silicone FF to max volume to start clipping the input of the amp and then dial in the feedback sustaing with the fuzz knob. Good luck!

I made myself a combo-board with a Dist+/DOD250 amalgam (basic Dist+ but with 1N914/4148 diodes and a bigger ground-leg cap) going into an Ampeg Scrambler ( http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/scrambler_sc.gif ).  Although the Scrambler itself lacks a volume control, the ability of the Blend control  to pan fully to a "clean" input/output means that the volume pot on the first distortion can serve as the master volume.  I am VERY impressed with the range of sounds that can be obtained from it with just four controls.  Everything from a slight hint of dirt to fuzz with hint of octave to so-over-the-top-it-needs-therapy fuzz.  The Scrambler by itself can be a deliciously chaotic sound, but pushing it hard with a pre-distorted signal sends it into the sort of overdrive that burns out its transmission.  Indeed, even if you ease up on the initial overdrive, feeding the Scrambler a too-hot signal sends it into retreat, where the Scrambler drops in volume, buckling initially, and fading back up again.  How much this occurs can be adjusted with the Texture pot.  Can't recommend this combo highly enough.  Stick a phaser or flanger after it, and bad acid here we come!  Owsley-approved. :icon_wink: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owsley_Stanley )

Apart from that, any Shin-Ei fuzz of that era would do nicely as well.

Mark,

I have the schem for the shineify-2 fuzzmaster redrawn by you(according to the schematic)
Whaat transistors, hfe are used in this fuzz?

Thanks!

Mark,

Why does it not surprise me that you're an Owsley fan?

+1 for the Scrambler fed by a distortion,
also the Foxx Tone Machine.

Both the Scrambler and FTM need the neck pickup with the guitar tone turned down to sound psychedelic.
It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.
Maybe I can afford one, if I do a little less drinking. - Fred Eaglesmith

Not sure "fan" is the right word (my total lifetime intoxication count adds up to roughly 12 tokes between 1972 and 73), but those of us of a certain age knew of him as a pivotal figure in North American culture at a certain time.  Enough that the very first time I heard the Steely Dan song "Kid Charlemagne", I immediately assumed it was about him.  Plus it was such a cool name the way it rolls off the tongue.  You just had to love saying it.  This was also a time when Oscar Wilde illustrator Aubrey Beardsley came back into vogue again, with similar art nouveau drawing styles showing up on concert posters.  So "Owsley" got lumped to gether with "Beardsley" in terms of name-coolness, and we remembered him.  Of course, before all these kids started showing up as acid casualties, the idea of a renegade chemist being able to cook up counter-culture struck us as cool too.  I would hope we all know a little better now.

you see, thats the problem...
im gonna be doing bass only psychedelic doom sludge
:P
but keep in mind, i pretty much play my bass like a guitar (...power chords...)
here is the sound ive got so far, using a pre boosted bazz fuss with a germ and silicon diodes in series and chorus and a fare amount of tone shaping

this track is my instrumental intro to my promo, although my vocals use the same effects as the bass does :P

i listened to the orphanum fuzz (or whatever its called), which is in the vein of the fuzzrite/etc, and i didnt really like the sound of it.
im not much of a fan those splattery sloppy fuzz pedals
besides. i dont like the idea of searching high and low and paying heaps of money for the right kind of GE trannies

also, could i for any chance hear a sample of what a pre driven ampeg scram sounds like??

NIce sounds. That's why my all Ge Bazz Fuss has become one of my favorites pedals. Can go from sweet textures to completely nasty when boosted.

I wonder how a pre boosted/distorted Green Riger and some chorus/flanger/eq may sound.

MXR+ + Scrambler, I guess it's time to try one.

yeah, im consided adding another ge diode (1n60) to make it go into the hybrid fuzz/dist mode, like described on home wrecker, but id like to use my last two ge's for my electra x2 (in series)

You could also look at the PE Experience. Its a Foxx Tone Machine Fuzz with a "Swell" circuit tacked on front, IIRC...you can find the schemo's on the web....

Maybe the Moosapotamus stuff can satisfy the request? ;-)

yeah ive seen that, i wanted to ask, did you get the idea for the diode with the switch between the transistors from my post about if you could put darlington transistors into darlington configuration???

scroll down and youll see the schem i did

cool thing is, soon enough, im getting a bunch of npn germs from the net that are the perfect gain for a fuzz face!!!!!!!!!! AND THERE NPN GERMANIUM!!!
