Just a real quick, general question: do I *have* to use polarized caps if the schematic shows them? I'm sure the answer is yes, since I ought to do what the schematic says -- but I just thought I'd ask...

Papa_lazerous

there are non polarised caps but they cost more, I think thats the main factor against using them

If you can find a 100uf non-polarized cap that can fit on one of Francisco Pena's or JD Sleeps layout or even one of MarkM's Vero layouts, you have my unconditional respect.

Who uses polarized caps for coupling anyways?

I was just referring to a couple of the caps in the BSIAB, as I was trying to get most of my caps in box form.

Certain circuits that use 1uF caps, like the EA Tremolo. 1uF film caps are quite large...  :icon_eek:

The largest NP cap i ever seen here is 1uF....

I have some good WIMA 2u2 poly caps, but they are 11mm high and 17mm across !!
Still "stompbox-able" so long as there's space ....

10uf Poly Prop caps - 46mm x 25mm x 17mm  :icon_eek: Maybe just a little big for a 1590....

1206 and 1210 size surface-mount ceramic caps are available in values up to 100uF.  They're big enough to work with and can be soldered to the pads where thru-hole components would normally go (about the same spacing).  All you need is a pair of tweezers and a little patience.

No need to replace them every few years.

Why you should always read the data sheet before ordering:

My first build some time ago - a GGG Bluesbreaker clone.
With 200v Sprague Orange Drop caps.

Took a while to figure out how to get it all in there, but it sounds great.
It just looks like a little oil refinery in there.   :icon_eek:

Now I actually read data sheets.  ;D

I actually built my BSIAB2 with all non-polarized caps. Got my hands on some non-polarized Aluminium Electrolytics  ;D

Bought them from Farnell through my school...

  Bubba that's funny looking.
