Sounds great Doug, I wouldn't expect anything else from you  :icon_wink:

Gus, as said, there's too many variables for a straight "clone" anyway, tolerences, the Tranny
and it's "own" best setup/bias ... your ears , fingers amp etc etc.
I dont think that I've built a single RM/FF that wasn't "tweaked" to taste :D

I love the NPN Rangemaster I built.  In fact, the tranny used is one that I got from Marty which are CV7112/OC140's as well.  A switch was added to go between a .0068uf and .01uf input cap.

I'm planning on building another one but with metal film resistors and possibly a tone control like the JavaBoost has, maybe even switchable input caps like it has as well.

QuoteNo  I just find it strange with all the information on the web that somethings are not improved but just cloned

2 reasons for that I can see, Gus:

1) The ultra-conservatism of the electric guitar playing community. For something that started out so "wild & outta control" they tow a pretty straight company line when it comes to equipment.

2) You don't need boatloads of imagination or electronics-design ability to service that community.

QuoteHaving a little fun with this thread  I think Doug understands.

Doug understands. Doug's got some new moves. Check Doug out...

QuoteWhen Doug was first playing with these mods, we talked, and I thought it was interesting that both he and I prefer to bias our RM type circuits low (in comparison to the RG article)...I keep them in the 6V-6.5V range, and IIRC, Doug likes them right around 6V as well.

Yeah, I saw some guy's web page with a Rangemaster with a 180k and I thought, hmmm, what's up with that? Also, you gave me the idea for the .022u on the output, Andy, a subtle but nice change.

:D ;D :D ;D

I'm just glad you're finding enjoyment with your hobby :)

so is putting a 6 way switch on the input cap a worth while addition to a RM? my inclination is no.

DougH

Depends on what you like, I guess. I always thought I would put a bias pot on this one. Then when I got it on the breadboard I realized this was my favorite setting and did not hear much use for making it adjustable. Also, to me there's something attractive about one knob, hit the switch & go.

Very nice clip!
I may have to try other cap values, then. I have a NPN Rangemaster I built with .001uf, .0033uf, .0047uf, .01uf, .033uf, and .047uf, with a rotary selector (mostly to compensate from I switched over from an SG to a Strat) , just because those were the cap sizes I had on hand...But maybe I'll try out other ones, now too. I should have socketed them.

doh!
I wish I thought of that before...

I would recommend using a "blend" pot similar to the EZ Face instead of a 6 way. Use a .001u for one cap value, and a .1u (or so) for the other. It will be far more versatile.

Hmm...Now that's an interesting idea. I'll have to check out the EX face, then.

i've only build one rangemaster and i tweaked it until it sounded good for me. never measured voltages anywhere in the circuit. i did however put a 9 way rotary with input caps on it and every position has a great usable sound. the most versatile and simple circuit i've built so far.
