Functional replacement, yes, but not a pin-for-pin replacement.

As for the original question, the two compressors have the same basic compression characteristics, but the Ross would appear to be a bit cleaner, and for that reason preferred by many people.  The Way Huge Saffron Squeeze is also a bit of a small step up in sound quality.  There is a layout of it posted in the gallery.  The 3080 you buy, whether CA or LM type, whether metal can or plastic, will work equally well in any of these 3 since the core of each is pretty much identical.

Thanks guys, btw is Ross sustain is somewhat can achieve SANTANA long sustain ad lib? I'm not familiar with compressor.

Lots of people I know prefer the Ross.  Check out the "Rody Mod" on tonepad.  It makes the unit switchable between Ross and Dynacomp.  Pretty cool  :)
Built: Fuzz Face, Big Muff Pi (Stock), Distortion + (Germanium and Silicon versions)

analogman says this on his page
"But the newfangled transistors used in the Saffron Squeeze are not as steady and smooth, so we prefer not doing 100% SS specs. If you wish we can do 1/2 SS specs, just the good parts of the Saffron Squeeze and the good Ross type transistors where they work better"

what would you suggest he means?  What transistors would you say need changed and to what? I have a dyan/saff and would like to give it a try just for fun.

I think we went over this some time ago. The SS uses MPSA18's, which have huge gain, and can make the unit distort.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

no that is correct, analogman also says they are not as steady and not as smooth.  However he doesn't swap out all the mpsa18's, I am trying to figure out which components to change and to what to make the saffron I am working on a bit better.  I don't have tons of components or else I would just experiment, I need to buy some stuff and want some ideas.
