I finished up my Rat mod today. It sounds really sweet!

You can see the schematic for it here:

You can LISTEN to it here!:

You can read all about it in my Blog!

Let me know what you think! I'm pretty happy with how it sounds. It almost borders on a booteek fuzztone when maxed out, and it gets a great crunch at lower settings.
Way more fun to play with than a stock Rat!

Sounds good, but one question - why the carbon comps. Surely you don't think they actually impart any sort of mojo to your tone

Of course the carbon comps are for mojo! :D
In my blog, this is described as a functional and mojo mod. Besides, I have them, so why not use them? They really don't add any appreciable noise at such low values as 1K. I wouldn't be putting any carbon comp 10M in there!

Well, I certainly can't argue with that. Think it'd add to your prices if you ever decided to sell it to a non-DIYer?  ;)

regardless of component *type* choice, I think it would be a very good mod for your needs! :)
Did you try any other opamps in there after the mods?

The only other single opamps I have right now are some LF411s which have nearly the same pinout, except pins 1 & 8 are for a DC offset compensation circuit as opposed to a frequency compensation cap. Maybe it would work anyway? I should try it as I'm sure it will have a very different feel -  though I do like how I was able to still get the LM308 to still get that sloppy slewing distortion even with a much smaller compensation cap; so it's like the it still has alot of the signature Rat vibe, but it's alot less mushy and dark to me now. That weird compression still happens a bit when maxed out, but it seems more unique to me now - you can really hear it when I tremolo pick hard on the low E string towards then end of the sound clip - it's does this crazy almost cutoff thing on the attack, but it stops doing that if I turn the gain knob back to a little past 3/4, which is what I do at the very end, when I play the low E hard again, but this time the attack doesn't get chopped.....

I'm definitely planning on doing the Brat with a different opamp. I think I'll try the extra JFET gain stages in that one too...
