Any recommendations  on a heavy metal distortion (or what's your favorite)?  I'm looking for something really heavy, high gain, to build.

Was another of Joe's called the "blackfire" or something?  I really liked it, too (transistor version).  For the technically minded, that circuit uses a mad impedance-mismatching gain control system.  It's a unique high-gain sound.

Hi, the Blackfire is another great Joe Davisson pedal. Here is my layout with a Marshall Tone stack added http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/v/Daves-Layouts/Blackfire_Marshall_Tone_Stack.gif.html
It's also great for heavy metal but I like the Obsidian better. Build them both and see which one you prefer. You can never have too many Overdrive pedals.
