MXR Noise Gate Pre-Planning

I've built each of the MXR Noise Gates from Tonepad with no luck on either one.
I'm re-setting and want to try again after doing a bunch of research. I've found some reports of total success building it exactly as it shows on the layout, and I've found build reports of total failures after weeks of tweaking.

So before I etch another board, I have a few questions:

  • One of the methods of fixing it that I came across was to twist the S&D legs of the 2n5485. Why would this work for some, but not be required for all?
  • I've also found that the 1M from G3 to Ra should be lowered, I've seen suggestions of 470k, 330k, even 1.8k- thoughts?
  • The build report with the 1M to 470k swap does not mention anything about changing the S&D legs could this be lowered and not require the leg cross?
  • I read that a 5532 is a quieter IC for this circuit- any input on that?

Thanks!!

Audioguy,
Mine, I just twist the S and D of the 2N5952 i used it's turned 180 degree.  The Layout Jfet center should be Drain. Check also the Source connecting to 10uf cap this cap should be reverse,  compare drawing layout with schematic the schem is the correct one. I used 2n3904 with hfe 145-150 and TL072 IC But to tell you honestly higher noise level I still got problem. Also when the last note fade little noise can be heard before cut off. Sure this project is so hard to perfect or build. I built 2 pcb already. Same results.

Cool, thanks for the input Roger- much appreciated.
